Hello speedcubing community,
I am writing this to address a simple question I have been trying to find the answer to. How do I improve on the megaminx? Does anyone have any tips? And after ages of searching, it seems that there are only tutorial vids on YouTube, and no how to improve. It got me thinking: Is megaminx a neglected event? As I am writing this, I thought of what might be the problem: Everyone has heard of a rubiks cube, unless they've been living under a rock since 1980, and could it be that 3x3 is just so much more popular? Before anyone gets all crazy on me, like megaminx isn't neglected and you're stupid and this that and the other, can I just address the fact that it isn't just megaminx. In fact, it appears to be EVERYTHING but old faithful 3x3. It seems everyone is to caught up in 3x3 that they forget about the other puzzles. I mean, it's only cause I like megaminx that I knew the world record, but can anyone who hates/doesn't have/doesn't know what megaminx is tell me who got it and what it is? Yet I'd bet good money on everyone on this forum knowing what the 3x3 WR is and who got it. Please don't leave negative comments,I just thought I'd share my thoughts on how much I believe 3x3 has brainwashed us.

I don't think 3x3 has brainwashed us... it's just the most popular. If you like megaminx, practice it. Nick has some good videos for it on Cubing World.

Thanks, and it may be the most popular but does that automatically make it the BEST? Should it be the best in non-cubers eye's? Anyone, gotta rest for Cambridge on Sunday (not competing in Saturday's events) so speak to you tomorrow. Tatty Bye

The way I see it is that the 3x3 is the 'mascot' of cubing. Everyone knows about 3x3, because it was first, its the best, whatever they think. Though, there are also a lot of puzzles that most people don't relate to cubing in general or don't know about them, on the other hand there are also people on the other end of the spectrum that enjoy these events more than 3x3. I think this is similar with Pokemon. Everyone in the world has heard of Pikachu, but unless you really enjoy Pokemon you probably don't know a lot about the others. Back to cubing though, I think some people do 3x3 and not much else because it's the first puzzle they probably hear of and learn and it is the one most recognised by media. I think 3x3 does get a ton more attention than other events but I don't think that is a bad thing if it can bring new people into speedcubing and allow them to discover new puzzles such as megaminx.

It just 3x3 is what people start with usually and random people don't know of other puzzles like megaminx, pyraminx or 2x2-9x9 excluding 3x3 of course. It not that events are neglected just that 3x3 is just popular. Clock seems to be the most "neglected" if you want to use that phrase but then you come to who likes what.

Come on now. Look at yourself. This is so obvious even the newbies don't bother mentioning it. It's the goddamn Rubik's Cube, which by itself created a huge fad in the 1980s. The one that sold 300+ million pieces and singlehandedly made puzzles popular again in the toy industry. The thing speedcubing is named after. Do you really think it's surprising in any way that it's the 3x3x3 gets more attention than any other event?

I would agree that the 3x3 is the most popular cube because it is sort of the "pioneer" of cubes.
However, if you really enjoy an event such as megaminx more than 3x3, than I wouldn't practice 3x3 more, I would practice megaminx more.
For example, I love the Pyraminx. It is my favorite event. I know the world record and the holder, which not many people do (but probably more than megaminx), and I practice it more than the 3x3. In fact, the 3x3 is the event I practice the least of all my cubes (except 5x5). In fact, in a competition I went to recently, I did ok in the 3x3, but I got third in the pyraminx. So what I'm trying to say is, if you like megaminx and want to succeed in the event, you should practice it about as much if not more than your 3x3 (if your schedule permits you to do this).

Sorry if I went off topic and didn't really answer your question.

I've always wondered why so many people favor speedsolving so much. I think qqwref gives the best reasons why it's probably so, but I'd think more people would specialize than they do at competitions. It's so much easier to get in the top 1000 (or top 100, or even top 10) at one of the less common events than it is at 3x3x3. It takes a lot of work to get sub-20 at 3x3x3, but that leaves you around middle of the pack in terms of WCA competitors. But if you put that same amount of work into, say, 3x3x3 BLD, you'd almost certainly be sub-1:30 and in the top couple hundred in the world.

I guess there's also the fact that some events aren't in as many competitions; I could see where that would discourage this behavior some. That's why I like to do them all! :)

The Rubik's cube is the reason that speed cubing exists in the first place. The other puzzles are there to keep us from getting bored. Don't get me wrong- I love the other events, but I have no complaints about forcing the others to bow down to the king of all puzzles.

I understand your frustration with a lack of resources pertaining to some events. However, the volume of 3x3 help you find only reflects the level of interest there is in it.

It's not brainwashing, it's just the reason why people cube in the first place. To start with I knew I wanted to get extremely fast at some event and I was toying with the idea of megaminx actually in my early days but found it boring. I knew 3x3 would be too 'mainstream' but I went for it because I knew I could add knowledge to the event as a whole in the future. Maybe you can take megaminx, something not so well known, and take it so far that people notice. Invent a new unique system. If you do something unique that works I guarantee megaminx will become a more popular puzzle like roux has gotten a more popular method though it was 'forgotten' when I first started.

There's no best puzzle but 3x3 is and probably will always be my favourite puzzle simply because it's what most my best memories of cubing are of.

mega:
42.28 - Simon Westlund (then Balint, me and Yu)
47.82 - Balint Bodor (then Simon, Yu and me)

3x3x3:
5.55 - Mats Valk (then Feliks... ehh japanese guy is fast too and american guy?)
7.53 - Feliks Zemdegs (Then Mats? ohhh yeah 5bld! and then this is embarassing, I'm passing on this one, I'm not going to humiliate myself by saying something random)

I think it's just you that was brainwashed.
am I close? xD

To me, 3x3 seems like just the right amount of challenge. Theres plenty to learn and plenty of ways to do it - Not only just solving it normally, you could also approach with OH, with feet, blindfolded. Plus there are lots of different methods.

Second, the 3x3 seems like just a very stable, and easy to manage cube. Its the perfect size and has so many varieties. I love all the new 3x3's coming out like the HuanYing and the FangShi. Oh and its pretty affordable.

Finally, there's just some indescribably feeling about a 3x3 cube to me that's so addicting. More fun than video games, etc, and just wanna stay up all night solving.

I, like many here, think the 3x3 is the perfect puzzle. It's simple, yet still challenging. It's a sprint, but it's not so fast that it just comes down to reaction times. As puzzles go beyond the 3x3, very little in terms of increased difficulty or complexity is actually added. It's just more of the same in many ways. The 3x3 captures everything we love about puzzles in a small and easily manipulated package. It lends itself so well to different methods and experimentation. It can be solved OH, feet, or blindfolded. It's perfect. Honestly, I don't see how anyone could ever get bored of the 3x3. I love solving my other puzzles, but I would be happy with just a 3x3. The other puzzles are just a garnish in my speedcubing dinner, 3x3 is the meat and potatoes.

What are the vegetables? The 2x2?

anyway, I got bored of my 3x3 after getting my megaminx :P

This is something I don't quite understand. In terms of solving it, a megaminx is a lot like a 3x3. The last layer is more complicated, but the rest is basically a lot of F2L. So if 3x3 is boring, what is megaminx adding that makes it not boring? I can understand preferring megaminx because you like a longer puzzle, but that shouldn't make 3x3 boring.

3x3x3 is boring... it's silly...

More pieces to solve, just more fun. 3x3 is just solving like 20 pieces (not including centres) compared to 50 or something.
