Hello everybody, this is my introduction to this great group. I'm from Canada and I've only really been speedcubing for a couple months. It first just started out with learning how to solve the cube a few years ago, and then I just thought I'd try to solve it as fast as I can, I don't have a regular practice schedule, I just sort of solve it whenever I have time and feel like it. I'm not that fast compared to alot of the times I've seen on here but I do continue to improve. I'm not too familiar with all the terms either so I tend to sometimes get confused by what people are saying. My current PB is 26.00 seconds, I just use the beginner keyhole type method where I solve one entire side except for one corner so I can solve the second layer faster before putting the last corner of the first side in place. My avg of 5 is usually right around 40 seconds, sometimes it does go down a few seconds depending on how the solve goes. I'm fairly new to the speedcubing world so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.:)

Hi! At 40 seconds, you should probably pick a speed solving method. Basically, you have 3 main choices: cfop, roux, and zz. Do your research on all three, watch some speedsolves, some example solves, some tutorials, and pick 1 to go with.

Thank you for the welcome. I definitely will look at those different ways to solve, I'd love to get much faster! :)

Welcome to the forums!
I see you've already been pointed to the different speedsolving methods.

Hint: ZZ is very nice for OH ;)

Woah woah woah, no hints! Let him decide for himself! Im gonna be biased too then! Zz is hard to learn, cfop is boring and repetitive, learn roux! Its fast, very low movecount, and the last step looks awesome! Join the roux side! We have cmll (only 42 algorithms, 9 for 2 look: wayyy less than zz or cfop) hint. No offense lorki3! Just sayin..

Why not learn Roux for 2H and ZZ for OH?

How is 42 CMLLs less than 7 OCLLs and 21 PLLs? Even COLL+EPLL is only four more algs than CMLL...

You can get sub 20 with 2 look cmll which is 9 algs... 2 look pll and epll is about the same, but coll + epll is sort of 'intermediate zz' while zbll (483) is full 'advanced'. with roux, full 42 cmll is 'intermediate' which i know and I am easily sub 15, while 'advanced' roux algs are 42 different cmll/coll to change or preserve edge orientation. Last time.i checked, 2 look totals the same, coll+epll and cmll totals about the same, but the difference between 483 and 84 is huge. Besides, whats easier? Eo line or first block? Lets not start a roux vs zz thread here and let habs decide for himself. Personally, I think cfop is outdated and at its limits, and the next wave of top cubers will use zz and roux (movecount).

Did I ever say you can't? I'm sub-20 with 2-look CMLL.

Wrong. They're just variants of ZZ. Yes, you could say one is more 'advanced' than the other, but learning full ZBLL isn't like a complete version of ZZ. Also, check your numbers, ZBLL is not 483 algs.

Nope, if you want really 'advanced' Roux in the same way ZBLL is advanced (i.e. always skip the next step with no influence before that step), you want full CMLL+EO. I'm not sure how many algs that is, but it's something like 2^5*42 and although you might get some repeats and you could use M2 as well as AUF to reduce cases, that's still quite a lot of algs.

So is the difference between ~1000 and 493.

If you practise enough, both are easy and can be done in very few moves. EOLine averages just over 6 moves according to the SS wiki, and although I can't find much about Roux movecounts I don't think it's going to be much lower than 6.

I'm not saying ZZ is better, I'm saying you're wrong. I prefer Roux.

Personally, I don't think CFOP is outdated. All the current 3x3 WRs are with CFOP. I do think Roux is better than both CFOP and ZZ for 2H, but not by much (and that's just my opinion). CFOP is certainly not outdated.

Well then. Whats your main method? Just asking.
