At the moment when I'm trying to build my blocks I'm finding it hard to average 20 moves to complete both. I'm averging 35-40 moves for this step. Is there any way I could reduce this number?

you could try to use the entire cube to take advantage of every turn to get a 1x2x3 block. I can get the first block in about 6-8 moves since I use every slice and turn available (which is easy since the entire cube is free). while I'm building this block i try to make pairs to put into the second block.

Instead of making a complete first block with one sequence, try breaking it down to a 1x2x2 block and connect a pair. Same with the second block.

using the M-slice should reduce that number down to about 12-15 moves which I average around. By the sound of the move count, I think that you kinda use F2L algs to put a missing pair.

yeah its hard to do unless you can track all the pieces you need. usually i end up with nothing but its worth a try so you can find ways to actually do it. so unless you can actually track all the pieces and place them where they are suppose to go, i suggest taking advantage of how free the first block is and go color neutral for the lowest move count (for the second block - http://grrroux.free.fr/method/Step_2.html should help a lot)

but for speed i don't go color neutral because i get confused about it easily :p

Hey Rawn,

To practice block building, I spent a lot of time not solving for speed. For the first 1x2x3 block, I would spend as long as it took to figure out how to put the pieces together, then close my eyes and see if I could solve that block. It takes practice and over time you are able to get closer and closer to 15 seconds. For the second block, try and do what waffle=jim is saying. Don't just pair the first thing you see. Try and make an optimal 1x2x2 then add the last pair. Don't go for speed at first, but just concentrate on doing optimal moves (try and avoid using F and B unless it is absolutely necessary). You can use a program to help you figure out optimal sequences. It comes with time and practice.

Sometimes, when I finish prepping a new(er) cube for speed, I'll take the stickers off (bad ones), replace with cubesmith, but only cover the first two blocks. That way, you can see how the pieces affect only each other.

If you can find this 25 moves quickly, yes :P You'll have to improve this step later, but you should works on others steps of the method first. You have more to gain in time.

I think i can always do the two block in less than 25 moves, but I'm not sure. I'm 20-22 main of the time.

For speedsolving I wouldn't recommend building the two blocks simultaneously unless you can solve the whole 1st block within the 15s inspection in your head and just look ahead and adapt for 2nd block (which I can't imagine). Just concentrate on the 1st block and look ahead for 2nd block while solving the last pair.

Additionally you don't benefit from a 8 move 1st block if you can't execute the sequence faster then a 10 move 1st block. So it's not about moves at all. (Fingertricks!)

Also, I'd recommend you to improve on the steps in this order: 4, 3, 1, 2, from the easiest one to the most difficult one.

I just did four random solves for the first two blocks: 25, 19, 22, 20.

A good way to cut moves for the first block is to swap white with yellow. Try it a couple of times and then you can decide during inspection if the white or the yellow first block is the easiest one.

Kind Regards
Martin

Hey Martin, how many moves do you average for the second block, because my count is insanely high (20s)? I know it's not about moves, but I think cutting moves = cutting times in this case.

Finding better sequences for the second block is very natural, just spend some time looking for them. Go really slow for the second block for about a week and I promise, you'll improve.

In Step 2, you can't detect all the 5 pieces right away for the optimal sequence and when going full speed I'm not really able to count moves. My average out of 12 for the 2nd block is 16, 14, 13, 16, (11), 18, (23), 14, 20, 17, 15, 13 = 14.6 moves, but as I said, when counting moves one is able to look ahead and make optimizations in a way that a speedsolve would not always allow, so don't expect this average in a speedsolve from me, unless I'd force myself to going slow.

Kind Regards
Martin
