Yusheng Du’s world record stood for 4 years, 199 days.


I want to take a moment to point out how absolutely ridiculous that is. Even the next longest standing 3x3 single - Erik Akkersdijk’s 7.08 - barely lasted for half that time. And arguably the most visible and sought after record in the WCA, in by far the most popular event, was also the longest standing record in the WCA.

And as a result of this, all the people who have rose to prominence and become world class since then have never held the record themselves. This is Max’s first world record single in 3x3, which is insane to think about when you consider the number is world record singles other historically dominant 3x3ers (ok, basically just Feliks) have held in the past. And the other top 3x3ers, like Tymon and Yiheng, but also Luke, Matty, and Ruihang, have also never held it. (A moment of silence for Matty’s 3.08 at during the country cup.)

This really is the end of an era. Massive congratulations to Max, and I look forward to more insane singles from the world’s best cubers.

That's the all-time longest WR? I only know it's the oldest standing record before Max broke it. (From WCA statistics, btw, where I can find the ranking including the records which are already broken?)

Not all time longest, that honor goes to the 0.49 2x2 single. I meant longest currently standing. Pretty sure it was 2nd place for all time longest though, or very close to it

To me I like the feel of the ys3m slightly more than the tornado v3, but I perform slightly better on the tornado v3

What surprises me the most is the double X cross. The X cross is easy to spot, but the fact that Max was able to spot a way to insert a corner and an edge while preserving the first X Cross just amazes me. The fact that he was able to find that in 15 seconds with everybody watching him and the amount of nerve he would've experienced makes him just as good as Yiheng and Tymon. When it comes to who is winning WC 2023, you definitely cannot count him out.
