Making an open source Bluetooth speedcube?

I am pretty into 3d printing and CNC machining and software, but FWIW I can't imagine how impossible it would be to design an open hardware speed cube that's even half as good as the Monster GO AI that sells for only about $30 USD for less than $100 USD. So while I am super unhappy with GAN for making it hard to write software for their cubes, I think an open hardware version just can't possibly be cost effective. I'd love someone who has built such puzzles to contradict me!
