I need your help.

If you haven't heard, Gil has taken down speedcubedb.com and cubedb.net. I want to recreate these websites, because they were important and people relied on them.

I have started by creating a website to replace cubedb. A lot of features are missing still, but here is a start: https://cubingapp.com/recon.html

So what do I need help with?

1. Tell me what features you loved about these websites, so I know what needs to be built
2. Help compile a database of algorithms. The database will be entirely open source, so nobody (not even myself) will be able to take down the database.

Update: here is a new website with a database of algorithms https://cubingapp.com/algdb.html

And here is an open source repository with the database! https://github.com/spencerchubb/algdb/

The website you made is amazing!
Just a couple of things you might want to work on (some of this is for the whole website, not just the recon):
1. Recon is not in the menu bar, so if people exit it, they have to manually edit the url
2. For the alg trainer, maybe add a “scramble” so you can do it on your own instead of having to use the virtual cube
3. Add different cubes (and side events) to the recon
4. Add a place where you can put times and TPS
5. Play button (not really needed, but would be helpful to have)

(I could help, but i’m not really sure how to code this kind of stuff. I might try to learn tho)

A few months ago I started working on a program that I've been calling "A nifty lil list of algorithms". I'd like to make it so it has images for each OLL and PLL case along with a quick description to help with recognition, and then two boxes you can type in. One would hold your algorithm, and the other for notes about finger tricks, rotations, or anything else that would help you remember or execute it. And then you would have your nifty lil list of algorithms!
I think it would be a good resource if you're still learning, or (like me) tend to forget your algorithms sometimes.

I have little to no programming experience, so this project could take up to a few years (if I dont abandon it completely), but if/when its finished, I would love to share it with you all and the community :)

please try to make a 3d reconstructions for every wca event because twizzle has clock and square-1 and 2d

Glad to see that someone is stepping up to help the community out by replacing the tools that were taken away, especially since so many people have relied on them over time.

Here is a link to a ZBLL sheet that I have in my personal google drive, you might be able to use some of those :)

They're a lot of CubeDB alternatives out there but the thing that (as far as I'm aware) no others have is the ability to critique your solves, I sure that's incredibly hard to program but it would be nice to have those free critiques back.

I hope you guys realize that the sites are going to return in a few days anyway. Whether you should resume relying on them given this is the second time this has happened this year is a different question.

I just realized that on the recon, moves like R’ and U’ don’t work. R2 and U2 do though.

Thanks!
Ethan

Has anybody asked Gil what it would take for him to keep the sites up and running?

Maybe a collab would be a better idea

I think we should leave Gil alone for now. Although we failed him, and by extention, ourselves, if and whenever he feels ready to, he'll be back and then we contact him

Stewy said the sites will be back up in a Facebook comment, for those wondering. If you visit SCDB rn you will see it says on break. This is not the first time Gil has taken the site down.

Money.

There was a thread, that is now deleted, in which Gil said that it's not all about the money. He doesn't want to contribute to a community in which things happen that happened to him. (This is how I remember it. I cannot look it up to be sure. Please let it know if you read the thread and remembered something else.)
