Just on the Minute line :o

Starting out, what does everyone recommend for inspection time? I've been doing 10 seconds and I think starting out it is not long enough for me since I am a beginner. I tried 15 seconds and immediately did my fastest solve (1:02). Is 15 seconds a good look-ahead time or should I give myself more or less time? thoughts?

15 seconds is what you would use in a comp, so yeah, you can leave it.

Thank you, 15 VS 10 seconds has made quite a difference although, much practice is needed on my end :fp

You should complete 1st and 2nd layer together!

Do you mean Petris method? I have been working on F2L, I do plan on looking into Petris to see if that may work better for me. Like others, I am having a hard time locating the pairs, I can insert them from "most" positions however, at times I find myself looking around for the proper corner or edge.

As others have suggested, I am going to slow down, work on the cross along with F2L and look into Petris to see if one favors the other.

yay xD just did 10 solves, 00:53.59, (00:37.23), (01:07.62), 00:57.36, 00:45.76, 01:02.09, 00:57.82, 00:44.04, 01:06.76, 00:52.68
Avg: 7 Seconds Better than yesterday 54.50
37 seconds record! non lucky :D
very excited to see that i finally beat the 40's ..
Thankyou all! couldn't have done it without your helps :)

However,, the only problem is that I feel like a nerd.. cubing 24/7.. when I start to practice at like 7pm, the next thing is that when i see the clock, it's like 3am... lol too addicted..
What about you guys? how addicted are you? (or were you in the past) :p

I think anyone who reads these forums are addicted very very much. :D
don't feel like a nerd. Because cubers are cubers. Cubers aren't nerds :D
Unless dinner conversations start off with, "sooo, what's you favourite Z perm, mine's a bit dodgy,":fp
THAT would be nerdy.:p

I reckon you should give yourself unlimited time.
Just take as long as you want planning out your cross, so when you're actually solving it you don't have to look at the cross pieces and you automatically start looking for the 1st F2L pair after some practice.

Then later, when you can memorize your cross faster, bring the inspection time down to maybe 25 seconds and gradually work your way down to 15.

Thanks, I will do that! Also, when you are solving the cross, is there a recommended pattern in terms of what color faces or how I should track a corner to lead into F2L? I find that when I get the cross done quickly I lose time finding a pair to start out with F2L.

I am amazed how much this site and everyone's input has helped, this reminds me of motorcycle racing where trying too hard actually makes you slower, the similarities in terms of approach are surprisingly similar. I slowed down to gain more consistency and I am solving faster than when I would try to "rush" (*slaps head)

When practising you should probably allow as much inspection time as it takes to plan the cross completely. After inspection you should be able to solve the cross without looking. If you don't start doing this now then it will take much longer before your cross times go down. Remember practice isn't competition. Things like slow solving, unlimited inspection time, BLD solving the cross have little use in comp, but are really good for training ;)

Cool, another biker :D What do you ride?

I will work on performing the cross without looking, I see that is causing me a delay because although I can solve the cross quickly, I am spending too much focus so when I get to F2L I am wasting time on corner/edge pairing.

My race bike is an 05 R6 (I race superbike/supersport) and I just bought an 09 R6 which will eventually become my race bike once I pay it off. This coming season I am going to run the endurance events (2 hour solo) and decide from there whether to continue with the sprints or stick to endurance racing.

Wow, that's some serious bikeage you've got there! Never done racing myself, mainly just ride the twisties in the Scottish highlands. Used to have a Fireblade, but now on a CCM supermoto - bit slower, but just as fun and keeps me from doing silly speed :D

Do you ever ride/race around Scotland? PM me..

Thanks! Also, I am working on performing the cross blind, actually a lot of fun but I need to work on it a bit. And reading through some threads, I think I need to learn how to solve the F2L with the corners that are on the bottom instead of bringing them to the top layer then solving. Time to watch mbadpiesto <-sp? F2L video, he has a lot of good pointers that should help. My OLL/PLL is ok so I think the time adders are down to mostly my F2L, cross is bad but not horrible, my F2L very very slow :fp

...supermoto is a lot of fun! I race indoor supermoto over the winter and I used to have a huskvara sm610...nothing like backing it in! :-D
