Hi, i want to purchase a new cube that's fast, long lasting and durable.
I've found one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Competition-Sta...hZ010QQcategoryZ19187QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
and i wanted to see if anyones bought it,
1. does it last long and does it spin good?
2. can you take it apart?
3. any problems?
4.and anyone know how to lube and where to lube??
well, if anyone else can find a good decent one, plz link me,
thank you for reading

That seems ridiculously expensive. If you want ebay, you're better off purchasing from puzzleproz. Most people would recommend www.cube4you.com. I really don't see why you'd spend so much on just one, especially if you don't know what they did to it and it's probably not even a diy. Even if it was as great as described, that's still pricey.

I believe cubefans is just the ebay selling account for cube4you.com. You might as well get a DIY to tune to your liking. It won't cost much more or less than that, anyway; that is, if you choose to buy the old type a.

Well actually i live in Australia,

Try buying a 2005 Chinese Rubik's Cube in the hexagonal packaging from any store. Read the base of the packaging to see they year it was manufactured. It'll set you back about AUD$30 but IMO is worth it.

Sandpaper
Then take it apart by popping an inner edge out and with a butter knife and sand all the inside surfaces with really fine sand paper.

Silicone Spray
Put all the pieces on some paper towl and spray it with CRC 808 and let it dry overnight. (Mitre 10 or select supermarkets, any hardware store I suppose)
Wipe down excess silicone with some tissues and assemble cube again.

Stickers
I strongly recommend replacing the standard stickers with some from CubeSmith.com as they'll last longer.

You'll need to work it in for about a week or two and it should be a fairly decent speed cube.

I've always been happy with my store bought Rubik's Cubes. Also, ask the salesperson if you can take it out of it's packaging and see if it turns ok. Use the arguement "I don't want to waste $30 if the tension isn't set properly". Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad. I've never had a bad one though :-)

Hey Tim,

I got the 2005 Rubik's cube you mentioned, just got it on Thursday. A problem that Im having is that my cube seems to be locking up a lot (ie, the face of the cube is slightly out of line so I can't rotate the cube) which obviously slows me down as I have to stop, align the face, and then turn. Is this normal for a rubik's cube? I've seen videos on youtube and nobody else seems to be having that problem. Should I return it and get a new one?

I had that problem with mine too. To fix it I got some very fine sandpaper (about a 30cm square) and rubbed the black inside faces of each cubie against it until the face was completely sanded (that is, no part was left polished).

Then I sprayed it with CRC 808 and it turns like a charm.

It is a little time consuming to sand and lube the cube but I think it's well worth it. My cube doesn't jam at all during my solves. Well, the only time it jams is if you try to turn a slice against the middle of another cube - which you just shouldn't be doing anyway.

Im in AUS too and i got my cubes from cube4you.com, easily the best ive used - much smoother / quicker than my 2005 cube..
