Is the Dayan Taiyan supposed to be like this?

I have a Dayan Taiyan, it was a DIY kit and I put it together, but I'm very dissapointed with it. I wasn't expecting it to be an amazing speedcube, but I expected it to at least be above average because of what everyone else says about it.

Thing is though after trying it myself, is that it seems below average, not much better than the YJ vvgoo-II's which aren't that great.

To get it loose enough so it doesn't feel horrible and locky and catchy, it overturns a little, feels too loose and is a bit uncontrollable. Tightening it just enough to stop it from being like this just makes it feel horrible and catchy again.

I've lubed it with Calvin's lube and it made no difference to how the cube feels, then I wiped it and lubed it with dry silicone lube and that made no difference to how it feels either.

What makes me confused though is like I said, a lot of speedcubers say it's pretty good, above average, even great. So have I done something wrong with mine? Did I just get a dud?

I haven't heard anyone talk about that cube in 3 years, and when they did it was never positive. It's a pretty old design, cubes have gotten a lot better.

Are you sure these people were talking about the Taiyan and not the Guhong or something?

Can't remember if I've heard people praise it on forums, as it was sevral weeks ago when I did some research on it before buying it.

I remember though that I did see a few Youtube reviews of the cube, the people that were reviewing it were saying that it was quite good. One of them was CBC and his review was a year ago when there would've been better cubes out.

Any TaiYan that you buy today is not from Dayan. It's a rip-off clone. By the way you describe it...

The clone did a pretty damn good job.

You won't feel a legit Taiyan that is much better. Sorry bro.

I honestly wouldn't know whether it is legit or a clone. It was a limited edition grey/silver one that I got from HKnowstore.

'Average' nowadays is a way higher standard than what was average when the Taiyan came out.

Maybe the tensions aren't even. Have you broken it in?

Which speedcubers said it's good?

I think it should be broken in by now, I've done many solves on it over several days.

I have found it very hard to get the tensions equal on it. I did tighten all the screws as far as they would go, and then loosened each one by the same amount, but then some sides would still be looser than others, so with a lot of guessing and experiementing I think I have managed to get the tensions equal on all sides, but I'm not 100% positive.

As for the speedcubers that said it was good, I can't remember which ones they were, except for one which was CrazyBadCuber.

I can tell you for sure if your cube is genuine if you answer this:

was the box a matte color scheme or was it glossy?

P.S. There is no 'limited edition' version of that cube. If you bought it and it says 'limited edition' I can guarantee it is not legit.

There was no box wth it. I've seen a few package videos of this DIY kit, and they didn't come with boxes either.

some quotes from CBC's video:

"It's definitely not the best in the Dayan series, don't get me wrong."
"It's actually not a bad cube."
"For a first model, this is an exceptional cube."
"It's a really good cube; you know, it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be."
"So yeah, it's a pretty good cube. It's definitely not going to be my main though."
"If you come from a later generation cube.....of course this is going to be bad."
"It's definitely better than a Cube4You DIY or something like that."

He never said that this cube was good compared to modern cubes, only that it wasn't as bad as he thought it was going to be.

Well, somehow, by continuing to mess with the tensions, I finally found some sort of a sweet spot and now it feels like quite a decent cube! Still over turns a little but it's not too bad.

There was the Alpha V and the FII which dominated until the GuHong arrived.
Nobody used that cube before the great cubes started being released.
I wouldn't expect much from it however I have never tried one.
