Is cube set-up going out of style?

Cubicle and SCS have both started making custom/premium cubes, and it makes me wonder... Are their setups really really good, or do people also just not like doing lubes and tensions on their own as much?

I'm just cheap, so I haven't ever paid for a premium cube and don't know what they are like, but I always end up with a set up that I really like when I do it. What does everyone think? Should cubers set-up on their own more often?

Ps: I'm only really taking about premium cubes, not magnetic cubes and mods and so on. I think that's a different thing, even though magnetic cubes are usually fully set-up too.

I think it's less popular than it was originally, however there will always be people who will set up their own cubes. Also what if you got your premium cube dirty and had to wash it out? Basically the extra money would be for nothing. If you can set up a cube yourself, just buy a bunch of lube and do it yourself, it's just a lot cheaper.

I definitely agree. The lube costs quite a bit as well, but I just think it's way more fun to do it yourself.

At the same time, I guess its not totally necessary either. Chris Olsen got super fast before he ever really used anything other than Traxxas 50k, lol. (Watch his lube video if you haven't seen it) He decided to buy nice new lubes once his huge bottle of 50k ran out. :D

I think that it isn't going out of style, I just think that people don't want to bother to set up their own cube. Having a nice cube in the beginning could be good for cubers who are just beginning, and they can learn about how to lube/tension their own cube later on. There are a lot of cubers who like to lube and tension cubes, and I think they will be still doing that, despite the set-ups.

Setting up your own cube could be better, since you can lube/tension it to your liking, and you know what you want specifically. Pre-setup cubes don't have the specific standards you would like to your cube. But for less experienced cubers, they wouldn't want to go through the trouble of lubing and tensioning their own cubes.

(sorry if this post goes all over the place, em tired)

I recently got my first premium cube, a cubicle Weilong GTS2. It was the best setup cube I have ever felt.
When I setup my new MF3RS2 using the Moyu setup tool and the cubicle lube kit, I first thought, it felt even better. So smooth and quiet. It turned out, that the premium cube was still better, but not much. (This may have to do with the cubes being different models).
However, I gave my MF3RS the same treatment, but could not achieve the same result.
So in my opinion, you can save money by setting up your cubes yourself and may or may not end up with a really good cube. Or you invest a few bucks on a premium cube and can be sure that it is perfectly setup.

Totally. I think I have formed my own preferences as far as how I do set-up, so sadly there's no going back for me, hahaha. Maybe one day I'll try a premium cube though.
