How's my method?

Hi guys, been cubing for about 2-3 weeks now, about 1:50 average, trying to get faster.

I think I prefer Petrus, which is what I've been working with, I've gotten to a point where I'm not sure if I can get faster though.

I start by getting a 2x2x2 then 2x2x3. Then instead of doing the good/bad edges thing, I fill in the one edge and 2 corners of a bottom layer, leaving me with two middle layer edges unsolved of the first two layers.
I use two algorithims to put those pieces in place, (ones I learned from a beginner method)

Once the F2L is done, I do F R U R' U' F' to make a cross on top, and then go back to Petrus (Niklas, Sune and double Sune instead of Allan)
I'm working on learning all the other algorithims for Petrus such as Arne, Bert, anti-sune etc.

I'm just wondering if this method is any good, and If I should keep working with it?

Also, how do you work out mirror algorithims? On Lars Petrus' site, he says you need to learn mirror algorithims, but doesn't say what they are, or how to work them out.

Thanks for any help

about 1:50 average ... I've gotten to a point where I'm not sure if I can get faster though.
Absolutely, you have a lot of room for improvement.

You can get quite fast that way, but I'd recommend getting rid of the LBL-part and using pure Petrus instead.

When I was ditching the layer by layer method, I kept bouncing between Petrus and Fridrich. Though Petrus does use fewer moves, it takes much more looking and thinking.

Obviously, it's just personal preference. But Fridrich is quick, repeatative and mindless.

I've been thinking of switching to Petrus myself, I am around 45s OH with it... stick with it. Try working on your move count to get fewer and fewer moves over time.
Mirroring is just like doing the symmetric algorithm on a a symetric case. Like if you encounter a case that looks exactly like the one you know only its "mirror" image you could perform the alg on the opposite side of the cube so that R becomes L' and U becomes U' and so on. You can mirror front back as well where R is R' and U U' etc. I think thats right...

Thanks for the replies guys. My average is slowly dropping, I'm getting closer to 1:30 which is good. I've still yet to learn the other algorithims so room for improvement still.

I think I might be a bit confused as to what mirroring algorithims actually is. Is it just applying the same algorithim (i.e. it has the same effects) from a different view on the cube, or does it do the opposite of the original algorithim?

My belief was/is

Take the allan, it cycles 3 edge cubes (Front, right and Left side) on the top layer. That is
F F U' L R' F F L' R U' F F

But the edge permutation can also occur, in a manner that requires them to be cycled in an anti-clockwise manner. <--Would that not require a mirror Allan?

Currently, I have to do the Allan (actually I do a double Sune, because it uses less re-grips) twice, in order to solve that, which is obviously inefficient.

Also, what's inverse? (what AvGalen said)
(geez, I feel like such a n00b!)

mirroring is.. pretend you got a mirror instead of your Mslice. apply your alg and look at the mirror hand. doing THAT is mirroring your alg

example

R U R' U' has a mirror of L' U' L U

inverse is the reverse of an algorithm. meaning if you do algorithm then its inverse, you do nothing at all

R U R' U' has an inverse of U R U' R'

as for your allan question, the alg is structured in such a way that its inverse and mirror are the same. this isn't generally the case (see above)

yea i remember about 3 months ago my avg was anywhere between 1:30 and 1:50 on pure beginner method. i kept using beginner until my avg was under a minute. once it was around 50-55 seconds i started learning fridrich. now avg about 35-45.
-----------------------------------------
best times:
3x3 single: 29.43 (lucky)
3x3 single: 32.61 (nonlucky)
3x3 avg.: 34.xx
4x4 single: 4.25.33

ahh, thank you hait2 for clearing that up :)

And also, what I meant by I'm sure if I can get faster, is with the method I described. Because I deviate a few steps, I just wondered.

Also, does the inverse/mirror Allan being the same, mean I could do either to have the anti-clockwise permutation?

(Woop! I just worked out the correct mirror for the Sune cheers hait1 and AvGalen)

Why would Petrus take more looking than Fridrich?
Why are there no fast cubers with petrus then?
Doesn't exactly answer my question. Could someone explain why he/she thinks that finding pieces is harder in Petrus than Fridrich? Just place the 2x2x2 block at DBL.

To answer your question: because there simply aren't much cubers (fast or not) who use Petrus. Same goes for Roux, CF, etc. Only a small fraction of Fridrich cubers average sub-15 and many aren't even sub-20, so saying it's better just because it's popular is quite naïve.

And you don't consider Anthony Hsu fast? He used to be #1 at Ryan's simulator.

Oh yes Anthony is fast too, it's just that you came into my mind the first thing when I think about petrus ;)
It's still strange to me. If you say petrus = less moves and same amount of looking it should be faster obvious than: Fridrich = more moves and equal looking. Too bad I suck at Petrus then I guess :P

Well it takes different looking than Fridrich I think.
I have been working on Petrus with COLL + EP the past two days and my main lookahead problem is on the expanding to a 2x2x3 block, since its a whole block its different than looking for just two pieces for a pair. I'll practice on Johannes's kool site to get better. And less moves + more practice = same looking.

woop!
I've learned my mirrors for the Allan and the Sune, and I got a top of 1:19 and am now averaging 1:25 :D
They might not be the best times, but they're improving :)
Cheers for the help guys

You should know better Erik. Johannes is not the only one (I don't even think he is the fastest)

Never mind, I didn't refresh.

yeah sorry Arnaud I know but, you know it, girls can make you forget things :)
Don't forget the things about the girl (birthday, toiletseat :)), otherwise the girl will forget about you

Why are there no fast cubers with petrus then? (besides Johannes)

How fast is fast? I may be on that list. :P

But in all honesty how I do Petrus has been severly influenced by Fridrich, but less naive than most people.

The world will come to an end when the world champion is a beginner method user.
