How to use different versions of the same algorithm

Hey all,

So, before I knew how to solve a rubik's cube, my friend taught me the R U Ri Ui algorithm. I played around with his cube (some amazing Korean one that was really fast), and I got fairly proficient with the R U Ri Ui algorithm.

Just yesterday, I learned how to actually solve the puzzle (LBL). In the tutorial I followed, they had me use the Ri Di R D algorithm to get the corners in the 1st layer as well as the corners for the 3rd layer. I found the Ri Di R D algorithm to be not as comfortable, and subsequently much slower than the one I was originally taught. My friend mentioned that these two algorithms are essentially the same. So, how do you apply the R U Ri Ui one? I know that for the Ri Di R D algorithm, you hold the corner you want to rotate on the top right, so how do you use the R U Ri Ui algorithm?

I'll appreciate any help you guys could give.

You hold the corner in the bottom-right. It's that simple. Also concider using both R U R' U' and U R U' R', so you never have to repeat the algorithm twice.

Yes, you can use the R U Ri Ui algorithms for the first layer. When you were doing Di Ri D R, you were solving the first side/layer on the top of the cube. Try solving it on the bottom of the cube. It's not easy to explain by typing so this video on YouTube (Badmephisto's Beginner Method video) will explain it in one of it's steps.

By the way, was your tutorial you followed the one by Pogobat or Dan Brown on YouTube? It is a very popular tutorial and YouTube, but what people realize is that the method he teaches isn't very fast compared to other Beginner Methods. He teaches with the Ri Di R D algorithm. The video is here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsQIoPyfQzM

By the way, most people label the counter-clockwise turn with '. For example, instead of Ri Di R D, it would be R' D' R D. The ' notation is more common.

Thanks for your help. Yes, you are correct in guessing I followed the Dan Brown tutorial, along with other various internet sources. So which beginner method would you recommend the most? If it the one you linked to?

Yes, Badmephisto's Beginner Method Video is one I think is great, along with some other tutorials inluding:

-Tyson Mao's Video Tutorial
-Bob Burton's Video Tutorial
-Leyan Lo's Tutorial

All of the tutorials above are ones I think are great at teaching and explaining. The methods they teach are very similar, so you only have to look at one if you want to. A

About changing to one of these video's methods, it's not that bad. I had to do it to (I started out with Pogobat too) and I changed, and it was well worth it. My times were going from 1:30 to 1:00 and all I did was switch a method, didn't learn any additional algorithms. I would strongly recommend you do it and I hope you improve! :)
