How to hold a competition

I was thinking about possibly holding one near Northern Michigan (for those who care), and I don't know how exactly to go about holding a competition? I looked on the WCA's website and didn't find anything.

I also have a couple additional questions:

-I've never been to a comp so do I really have to know how one works or does a WCA delegate do that for me?
-If I was the one who organized it, can I compete?
-What's a good prize package that would draw a decent crowd?
-How many cube knowledgeable people have to be there (ie: people who do the scrambles) I'm not sure how many people who are fluent in algorithm notation are in my town.

Thanks,

Try going to one - it helps you understand them a LOT better. However, asking here is the second best thing you can do!

I would go to the WCA website, as it has a list of regulations that would definately be helpful to you.

As for a prize, you could offer a cash prize, a puzzle (rare hopefully) or simply stickers, most people go to competitions mainly for the competing, not necessarily for the prize.

It is easy to teach people the notation, and you could always do it yourself. It is really not too hard.

In short, the WCA website should teach you the most, and will certainly be the most useful source of information you will get.

What's near northern Michigan? UP?

The WCA delegate is going to make sure the WCA rules are followed. You can have a competition that's not enjoyable, but still follows the rules.

-If I was the one who organized it, can I compete?
Yes, as long as you have someone else do the initial scrambling.

-What's a good prize package that would draw a decent crowd?
You're going to have to have a significant prize if you want people to go out of their way.

This is part of organizing. You'll also want to have judges there also. If you don't have enough people in your immediate area to scramble, do you expect to have enough to hold a competition?

Thanks for all the info guys!

Bryan - yep, I'm talking about the UP. The main reason I want to hold one is because I can't find any competitions within a reasonable distance. You're from the general area, where do you go for competitions?

I went to the US Open in Chicago, because it was close and there was a direct flight from Rochester. Other than that, I go to the Minnesota Open because the guy who runs it always schedules it when I can attend and even schedules a few side events that I like, like Square-1.

Delegate

I am in the process of setting up a competition here in Florida. I just need to see how many ppl would be interested in coming? The competition would around late March, early April. Also I know there are delegates that post on the forums and wanted to know if there are any interested in being the delegate for this competition. Interested delegates please contact me at by emailing me [email protected]

What part of Florida and when? I'd be interested in coming as long as the date doesn't conflict with my schedule.

sometime in late march early april im still setting it up so yea but in Deland Florida at Stetson University events 2x2x2,3x3x3,4x4x4,5x5x5,3x3x3OH,3x3x3 BLD,Magic, and maybe something else.

Gainesville is about 2hrs from Deland. Deland is about 30min from Daytona. Bring plenty of people I want to be bigger than last years. I should have things figured out sometime within the next week or so.
