Hi there , i'm a new member to this forum and also a cubing newbie i started 11 days ago and now i get an average of 2min20 using fridrich method ( did a 1min36 by luck)
Here's my questions:
the first cross take me too much time a minimum of 26 secondes is normal or am i to dumb?
If i learn all the 57 OLL and the 21 PLL can i get under a minute?
and at average how much time does it take to get to 30 seconde ?
thank , hope you'll answer my questions :p
(sorry for the gramma mistakes , english is not my native language :p )

dont try to learn all the algorithms but try to learn 2 look oll and 2 look pll, the best way to improve when you are in that time range is getting in a lot of solves.

As Bunyanderman said, a lot of solving will help a lot at your speed. I went from 2 minutes to under 1 from just solving. 4 look last layer is really helpful though. Don't learn all the OLLs and PLLs yet. It can take a few months to get sub-30; I did it in 4 months but it can be done in half that time.

I wouldn't worry about how fast your improving as long as your improving. Some people learn fast while others learn slow, but that doesn't make them any faster in the end really. Things like how much time you have to spend cubing and environmental factors may also affect this.

When your first starting out, you can usually get faster just by solving rather than drilling certain parts of your solve. I'd suggest working on your solve as a whole before worrying about just the cross. It will improve given time.

Learning algorithms can help your solve. For starters, I think you should go with 2 Look OLL and work up to 1 Look PLL. You then should work on making you F2L (First two layers / inserting pairs) smoother by looking for other F2L pieces while solving one pair. After you get faster (45s or lower) You can work on learning Full OLL. I now average close to 30s and still haven't learned Full OLL. I'm not sure I want to put time into learning the algs when I'm not going to stick with Fridrich/CFOP for speed solving.

Also, If your interested, I'd suggest that you learn key-holing and block-building just to widen your understanding of the cube. It could improve your F2L.

If you added information such as what last layer system your using and what kind of cube you have, you may get a more accurate answer. What cube you use doesn't really matter as long as it isn't horribly bad. I've used cubes before that were extremely hard to turn and resulted in a slow solve.

Hi Alighieri, I am newb to speedsolving as well, so I still remember how I started and hopefully I can give some helpful advice. First of all, try to plan your cross during observation, try to imagine where all the white edges are and if necessary, just train your cross only. Also, don't try to match the pieces with both colors, rather remember how the white edges are arranged. For example, I remembered that red is to the right of blue, and orange is to the right of green, and orange/red and blue/green are on opposite sides. Based on those rules, build the cross and then pair all the pieces with their middle pieces at once.
Don't learn all the algs yet, you can save much more time for same effort if you learn to do faster cross and look ahead f2l.
I personally got to your level in about 5 days or like that, and I am around 30 sec after 70 days with full pll and 25 algs from oll.
Hope this helps, good luck cubing.

dude u think way above ur average
u should first learn beginner before fridrich get 2 1 minute 15 secs wit that and then learn fridrich
thats what i did and i average around 30 secs

Hi my average is 2 mins 20 sec. I learnt the beginners method last year and have just being practising that. I learnt f2l about two weeks ago and I have practised about 20 mins a day but my average has gone up from 1min 48 secs to 2 min 20 sec. What am I doing wrong?

As Jakube said, this happens to everybody. My timings dipped around 20 - 30 sec in the first or second week i learnt f2l but with another week or so, timings got better and I get 20 sec less than my actual timings. So stick with f2l it's gonna help u a lot, believe me. And also remember that in intuitive f2l u mustn't take more than 12 moves to insert an edge( if ur method of inserting them is very finger trick friendly, 10-12 moves or 8-10 moves). And also get a better cube than urs if ur using any local brand. A good cube of moderate price will improve ur timings to around 1min30 sec. get ur f2l to 50 sec and ur last layer to 20 sec. Take 15 sec for cross max. Practise both cross and f2l and practise fingetings for the last layer too.

I'd suggest plan your. Cross do it in 10 moves or less and work from there take your time. Also what kind o cube are you using because if its a store bought type that isn't a fast turning cube or has no corner cutting might be slowing you down too. And also maybe try to work on learning intuitively rather than being a alg bot, you will have more fun with cubing in the future.

Hello again , thank you all so much for all the quick replies (i'm really amazed by all the active members of this forum )
i have a trash cube that i bought somewhere less than 1 dollar , it's not bad at turning . i can't seem to find an original one in morocco
so to sum up what were you saying , i should dump the alg for now , and practice 2 look OLL and 2 look PLL A LOT / F2l and cross ......so....... practice practice practice?

I'm sorry to pop the question again but i really need to know should i just keep practicing i know all the basics of cross f2l 2 look oll 2 look pll but i get an average of 2 min ( for 4 days i guess ) so if someone can reassure me that if i only practice with 4ll i can get pass the 1 minute barrier that would be grat , and when should i begin learning 1 look pll
I'm really sorry for the dumb questions , thank you for your time and hope you'll answer me

There is no need to learn any algs at this point, you can manage sub 60 seconds with <8 algs. You may want to start with 2-look OLL, then go to 2-look PLL. Full PLL, good F2L, and look ahead can take you to sub-20. Full OLL will take your times down by a few seconds.

I don't get why people say you should learn a beginner's method first. I went straight for Fridrich, with 2-look OLL and a few PLLs chosen randomly. I learnt the rest of the PLLs and since then I've just practiced and improved F2L and gradually learnt a few more OLLs as they came up. That's taken me from my first timed solves being around 1min 20s to now averaging about 21/22s.

There's no better way to learn something than to practice it well. Don't regress to a beginner's method, that would be madness! Instead read this thread.

No two people are the same - everyone will progress at different speeds, so don't feel you HAVE to listen to any individual poster's advice, or feel under pressure to progress at a certain speed. In my experience, many people's claims about their progress are somewhat exaggerated, so don't let that bother you. Cube for yourself, and learn things when you feel ready to learn them, or when they will significantly help you.

Having said all that, you should probably have read the two threads I linked to above before posting, especially the 'how to get faster' thread. Your thread should not exist!!! Now go and read them, and get faster!

Happy cubing.
