The rule for FMC is 3 cubes, and personally that seems like a good number to me. I'm just wondering though: is there anything you could do with 4 cubes that you couldn't with 3? What about 5? Would there be a use for having 10 cubes for FMC? At some point having more cubes is just going to get confusing. This is of course a strictly academic discussion, I don't think the rule will change, and I am in no way convinced that it ought to.

I think that rule about having three cubes is stupid. If you own more cubes, then you should be able to use them. You don't even need a cube for FMC so why should they have a limit?

The point is not so much how many ought to be allowed, but if infinitely many were allowed how many WOULD you use? If you had 1,000 cubes just trying to keep track of them, let alone scramble and solve them, would be counterproductive. There are obviously uses for more than 1. What I'm wondering is where in between those extremes is ideal.

Maybe it's because I'm a noob at FMC but I always use only 2 cubes. One of them for finding the skeleton and a second one for insertions (that is, to protect the other one from the awfully sticky insertion stickers).

the maximum number of cubes i use simultaneously is 3, for insertions. one to go through the solution for good comms, one for remembering which corners i need to comm (i don't to insertions enough to bring extra stickers with me), and one to test out algs. obviously i'm not great at fmc so i can't really give much feedback but 3 cubes works fine for me

almost every number in the WCA regulations is completely arbitrary

+2 penalties
15-second inspection
notifications during inspection
3-cube FMC
1.5-meter spectator distance
mean of 3
avg of 5
pretty much all of Article 9

and many more

In my opinion, the only non-arbitrary number of FMC cubes would be 0, 1, or unlimited.

Limiting the number of cubes doesn’t serve any purpose in context of the event objective.

Also, (not limiting) evens out the playing field as not all fmc solvers are sub 10/20 in 3x3.
sorry my guy but you just bumped an 8 year old thread so please be more aware of when the last post on a thread was made.

I think it was a good bump (as many are). I really wish people would stop complaining about good bumps like this. It's tiresome and unhelpful. A bad bump is one that doesn't add anything to the discussion. This one did, so it is very good.

I like the argument about slow 3x3x3 solvers. Of course, I would like it, since I'm a very slow 3x3x3 solver relative to my FMC level.
