How does an M-slice work?

There's a lot of variation on how people do M moves - there's a whole thread about it here.

E and S slices are just the other two slices (afaik it's E for "Equator" and S for "Standing"). They don't tend to be used much in solves.

How do you execute M quickly? M' is easy, in H perm, you can even double flick with the left hand's middle and ring finger. I'm having trouble finding a way to do M U quickly, it feels unnatural doing a M with left, so I do it with right, which slows down the U.

or you can push your right/left ring finger up from BD, but I only like that if it comes after an M'/M2, otherwise your hand's not really in the right position for it.

ok what? I realized I've been doing the 2LOLL's Z-Perm with M instead of M'. It doesn't make a difference... is this a one off case or does it really not matter?
