How do you get algorithms? I don't mean the one's that are already out there, I mean how do you come up with your own? Is there any program that can find optimal solutions?

Any help would be appreciated.

one advantage figuring algorithms on your own is that you don't need to learn those, the moment you figure it out you'll instantly remember it and probably never forget.

i'm now learning some new algorithms given to me and it's hard. not just learning it but executing it.

those that i figured out on my own i have no problem with.

best way to do your own is to use commutators and conjugates (although you'll soon discover that most already exist).

have a look at Heise method to learn commutators and conjugates

- Acube
- Cube Explorer (though it's harder to find finger-friendly algs with that)
- Knowledge of commutators: http://solvethecube.110mb.com/commutators.html. Make commutators, and combine with setup moves.
- Fooling around, making variations of other algs
-ksolve
-manual coding to search for specific algs (I did this for CLS...)
-trying every possible alg

Oh, and Joel: Set up a state, right-click on UF and FU, then "Add and Solve." Make sure you have a new version of CE.

Undo F2L pair, redo it in a diffrent way.

Eample: undo = R U R' , redo = U R U2 R'

Eh, wait, that looks like Sune :p

Well, another one then, more advanced: undo pair 1 = R' U undo pair 2 = L U' redo pair 1 = R redo pair 2 = U L'

Darn!, that made a Niklas, well, looks like I can't make algs, just reinvent :P

I randomly did R & U turn an got a Z-Perm but can't remember and remembered my other made-up one: (U' M' U M' U2 M'2 U M' U2 M'2)

How about open with R U2 R' then U2 and insert with R' F R F'

I redid the ending of some PLLs and found some really nice F2L algs. Mostly, I come up with algs messing around with cube. Sometimes I make variations of existing algs.

Hehe, that how I found one of my CLL's, inverse, mirror and inverse mirror makes four of them.

To remake them to COLL use L U' R U M instead of R' F R F' (Yeha yeha, do F R' F' R first and end in L U' R U M and you got a ELL, inverse, mirror and mirror inverse makes four, but there is a shorter alg for those)

Next thing is to start like R U2 R' U R U' R instead of doing R U2 R'. Add the mirror and you got two more CLL's, end using L U' R U M and you got two COLL's instead.

Shall I continue??? :D

Seriously, why should I? I think I explained the approach, do experiments using unpair-repair (hehe) and you will find algs you understand that uses fast F2L moves, algs that wery often are optimal in length, I have not used a solver many times because it's not needed if you have practice alg searching a bit. And it's fun too :)

Need more?

Well, use two short algs in a combo, antisune + U-PLL orients three corners optimally if you do the proper alg for U and save a turn in between. Most useful algs for combos are Sune, antisune, Niklas + mirror, U-PLL, J-PLL and FRUR'U'F'
