I want to find out how people on this forum got into cubing.

I first got into cubing when I was 9 years old. My grandmother bought me a Rubik’s Cube and I spent literal hours on YouTube trying to learn to solve it. Eventually I learnt how. My friends were also into cubing and we spent hours listening to Spotify on max volume cubing together. Ever since I’ve always been cubing.

Bought A cube due to school hype, spent the whole Christmas holidays figuring it out(could never get the last step of beginners - I had to accidentally get a similar scramble to the guy in the video. Then came back to it 3 years later and joined the community, another year and a half break, and I joined again

March of 2020. I was bored in my house. My stepdad can solve a cube so I asked him how to do it since I thought it was impressive.

He taught me how to solve a side first, and then taught me how to solve a layer. Then I just learned the rest on wired's tutorial.

I actually didn't memorize all the algorithms until March of 2021, in which I would use rubiks.com to memorize the PLL algorithms for me.

The algorithms I took a long time to memorize were pa move-optimal U perm which I used for EP, and an Aa perm, which I used for CP.

I actually know my first PLL was an Aa perm because I got an EP skip, and you can't do an Aa perm from a diagonal swap PLL into an Aa perm.

As a Kid of the 80's I've got one of the Originals but I could never solve it, so I didn't play much with it.

More than 3 decades later, my mother in law bought some cubes for my nephews and nieces.
Also this time no one could solve them but now we have the internet, so I learned it to show then 😜
After I could solve it, I wanted to get faster, and faster and faster...
...get better cubes, learn other cubes and still want to get faster...

My nephews and nieces never learned it but they like to scramble all my cubes and watch me solving it 🤣

Some kid talking about cubing at my school made me want to try it out.

My parents bought me a Rubik’s cube for my 6th birthday. After fiddling with it for a week( I thought using the internet was cheating. ) I never touched it again until December 2021. In December I decided to pick up my dusty cube and learn how to do it. A month before one of my friends learned how to do it. Though back when I was 6 my other friend knew how to do it but he didn’t teach me that the internet was not cheating. But in 2021 my friend didn’t introduce me to cubing but he introduced me to speedcubing. It took me a whole month to learn but I did it. My intention went from learning to being faster than all of my friends. And if didn’t take long. Within the next month I passed my friends. Sadly in the next month they all quit because I got so much faster than them. ( My one friend kept doing a year later and attended a comp with me a month ago ) That is the story of how I got into speedcubing.

I started a hype in my home room in 6th grade lol.

I had some Rubik's cubes in my house. My mom could solve the first layer on both the 2x2 and 3x3. (A layer, not just a face) eventually, I wanted to learn how to solve a 2x2. So I used this guide (https://assets.ctfassets.net/r3qu44...c4d182ca4638bce/Rubiks_Solution-Guide_2x2.pdf)
please don't use this guide, you are much better off learning from a YouTube video. The guide has the least ergonomic T perm and I had to relearn T perm because of it.

lol they really called the 2x2 a Rubik's Mini in the guide. That proves it's a bad one 😂

I started cubing because my mom brought me and my siblings to Walmart and everyone got a toy and I was having a hard time choosing and my mom gave me limited time because she was tired and wanted to go home. Then she said "Why don't you get a Rubik's Cube?" Then I said Ok.
Then when I got home I used it for hours trying to solve it. I thought that people solve it side by side. Then on youtube I saw Feliks Zemdegs' 4.73 solve then that inspired me to start speedcubing (I also saw Jperm's 1x1 video and made one out of paper since anyone can solve it XD) . then a kid I met at church showed me how to solve it. I started with a 1:30 average and now I have a 28 second average. Thats how i started cubing.

How did you get into cubing?
I've told this story a couple of times before but here I'll tell it in some detail, around 7 years ago fairly sure I started gaining an interest in cubing when I watched at least the first part of this CaryKH video: Video so my mom bought me a Rubik's Brand for Christmas, for whatever reason I did not follow any of the tutorial Cary had linked in the video (I think my low attention span young self clicked off before he mentioned them), and tried to solve it without help it obviously did not work, I concluded that speedcubers must know from seeing the cube how it was scrambled and knew how to reverse it so I gave up and lost the cube at some point, last June shortly before my 14th birthday I found this CubeHead short: Short I followed the tutorial in the description with a QiYi Budget cube my dad had for some reason and could somewhat do the method my the time I went to bed (I started fairly late), I had memorized the "Alg's" by the end of the next, day. I was a casual cuber for a while and never really timed myself, when school was starting school they had this thing at the start of the year called the "IA Olympics" and one of the things they had was a 3x3 competition so I decided to sign up for it, that was in the morning and the event was near the end of the school day so I figured during the middle I would time myself to get a gauge on how good I was, using my phones stopwatch I timed myself a couple times and they where really bad, but each successive time was better and I really enjoyed actually trying to so solve faster.
That was way to long

I've had a Rubik's brand cube since I was around 6, but I never took it very seriously. One year on our annual family reunion in Florida (around 7 years ago), my Uncle brought his 7x7. He wasn't a speed solver, he just really enjoyed riddles / puzzles (he is also fiercely intelligent). My dad said that when he was a kid, he learned to solve the cube on his own, with no help! That week, he taught me how to solve the first layer, and with the help of youtube and the Rubik's Cube Best Algorithms book from amazon, I was solving in under 2 minutes.

After that, I wanted to get faster and explore the rest of the world of twisty puzzles, and within the next year, I had a 2x2 through 5x5, megaminx, pyraminx, and several other non-WCA puzzles. I averaged around 45 seconds with my 3x3 and 5 minutes with my 5x5. But for some unknown reason, I slowed to a stop.

That was 4 years ago when I packed all my cubes into a box and set them aside. Then, back in April of 2023, me and two of my friends was at Books a Million, and they found a Nex Cube for sale. They both bought one and later that afternoon when they had unboxed both cubes, I explained to them how to solve the first two layers. It was then that I realized, why did I ever quit cubing? I shook the dust off of my old cubes, placed an order with Speed Cube Shop, and now I'm back for the long run. Also, both my friends are still solving, and one of them is now solving the 2x2, 3x3, 5x5, skewb, and square-1.

I was introduced to Rubik’s cubes by the super Mario maker themed cube gifted to those who pre ordered the game. If anyone knows about this cube, they know it was the cheapest throw-in gift Nintendo could afford, and I’m pretty sure it turns worse than the original Rubik’s brand (not lying it’s that bad). I was fiddling with this and another cube that was an official cube that turned only slightly better yet missing some stickers.

My dad wanted to show me a real cube and we proceeded out of the house one night in 4th grade to pick up pizzas and go to Walmart to buy a cube and a magic 8 ball (random lol) with a gift card I got for my birthday. We bought it and I was so scared to scramble it that I barely made any turns in the car.

Dad tried to teach me using a website called howtosolvearubikscube.com or something and I was too lazy to learn any algs so I only solved it with the guide. (This site is a really tough beginners method lol, idk why they didn’t use an easier method.) He eventually tried to have me learn to solve the white side! I struggled with this this greatly, and solved the white side but not layer, after like 10 minutes. I was so proud of myself. I remember he told me that I need to solve the whole a layer, and eventually I figured out the first two layers without a guide. After that, I gave up on last layer.

Fast-forward to one of the first days of school in 6th grade. I walked into my first enrichment class, (I think it’s for like high iq) and the first assignment my teacher gave us was to solve a Rubik’s cube. We literally walked in and she slammed a Rubik’s cube on our desks and said solve it. Groans echoed from the room from the about 20 kids in the room, including phrases like aww I can’t do it, this is stupid, and several kids who were like, well I’ll try my best. She paid attention to our mindset, because that’s what she was testing with this, our mindset (it was a lesson on growth vrs set mindset). I was able to recall the muscle memory to solve the first two layers, and she motivated me to learn from a YouTube video (which also wasn’t amazing but I was the one who found it). I remember practicing hard for two days until one Sunday morning I solved it in the car, on the ride to church in the morning. Once I learned and reported it back to her, happily, after congratulating me she told me to start timing myself, and help others in the class learn as well. I remember trying to improve my about 1:45 minute times on some cheap timing website I found on my Chromebook and getting annoyed when I couldn’t improve. I got even more demotivated when I taught my best friend at the time and he instantly got faster than me. I thought, “I already know how to solve it, why get faster.” I put the cube on my shelf and glanced at it guilty for about a year.

Let’s fast forward again to the last quarter of 7th grade. I had somehow gotten the urge to solve the cube randomly one day and was hooked. I remember getting stuck with the times I used to have so I learned beginner CFOP. I was happy to report this to the enrichment class I was still in (not anymore sadly but I miss it) and my friends were amazed. Once I learned it, I solved so much I went down to 23 seconds as my pb at the end of 7th grade, timed on my watch bc I didn’t have a phone app yet lol. I continued to improve and learned full Oll and PLL over the summer. My alg motivation was being tired after my running club in the morning and retiring to my room to listen to layer by layer (the best podcast ever) and learning algs with a snack and maybe Gatorade. I got more involved in the cubing community, including watching Jperm regularly like a basic 13 year cuber who doesn’t know any other good channels, and somehow finding this website, which I stalked without an account for a while until convincing my parents to let me make one in early 8th grade (about 9 months ago).

Since then I was amazed when I got my first sub 20 averages, and also brought my 5x5 times down to sub 2 sometimes and other times not. On October 31st I got my first sub-10, and have about 7 now. I’ve attended two wca comps, made a vlog on one, gotten crazy unbelievable results there for me, and am glad this hobby came into my life.
