I am getting a mf8 square-1 v2, and I heard it is really bad out of the box. Please reply in this thread if you know what is the best way to lube/ break in this cube. I would prefer it to be a fast, and smooth cube. Thanks.

Take the whole thing apart. Take out the spring, and put it back together. Tighten it to the point where you can't pull the center pieces apart more than 1mm or so. Remove one of the corner caps and put a few drops of Maru lube on the "track" inside and work it in a bit.

If you do it right, the puzzle should be smooth enough to turn quickly. However, that won't stop it from popping. I once dremeled down all of the internal edges of one, and "florian modded" all the pieces, and it cut down the pops significantly. Not completely, though.

Lemme see if I can find an Mf8 v2 lying around, and see if I can "fix" the popping issue. I managed to make my Cubetwist unpoppable by removing the vertical springs (the ones inside the core that allow the track to flex), although it makes it a lot less forgiving for corner-cutting. I'm not sure if the mf8 v2 has the same springs, but there's a chance it does, in which case that should make it unpoppable.

Speaking of finding it, 'tho, does anyone know how to actually tell these things apart? :P All I can tell is my Calvin's feel bad because I haven't broken them in at all, and Cubetwist stickers are thin on the edges.

@brandbest1 TIL that MF8 Square-1 v2 != MF8 Square-1 II (the latter is the ball core one, which I 100% agree with you sucks really really bad and the only real correct option is to get a different Square-1)

I always thought they were the same thing with the ball core tho...

mf8 v1 = original one / Calvin's
mf8 v2 = ball core
There is no mf8 that have springs like the CubeTwist.

What's a v2 then?

Oops, looks like my very poor Google search was wrong, my bad guys >.< After actually properly looking through the search results, mf8 v2 == mf8 II == absolutely terrible.

So back on track of the thread, I agree with brandbest1, in that honestly your best bet is getting a different Square-1. It's just too unstable - it sounds like with all the work Andrew put in, it still wasn't fantastic, so if you value your time at more than [insert price of pretty much any other Square-1 on the market] per hour, just get a new one.

Well, it depends on your definition of "not fantastic". It cuts corners. Insanely. If pops were not an issue I would say this is the best square-1 hands down. The only reason I don't use it as my main is because the pops are too common.
