I'm getting more and more into cubing, spending more and more time on this site, so I figure I should introduce myself. I'm hoping to continue posting my PBs, goals, frustrations in this thread in order to keep track of my progress and maintain motivation. I also don't know a single cuber within 500 miles, so it'll be nice to interact with other cubers, even if it's only in the virtual world.

About me:
My screen name is pronounced J.F.B., which you may have guessed, are my initials. My name is Josh.

I'm a graduate student, working on my PhD in evolutionary biology at the University of Oregon. My research is focused on the evolution and origins of adaptive traits. If anyone is interested in ANYTHING ecology and evolution, feel free to drop me a message. I love evolutionary biology, and I love to share that passion with people of all ages, and all levels of education.

I'm currently engaged to the most incredible woman I've ever met. We're planning to tie the knot summer of 2014.

I currently own dozens of tarantulas, ball pythons, dart frogs, and one long-haired Chihuahua. I've kept and bred many species of reptiles and tarantulas. If there's a species of tarantula in the hobby, I've probably owned it at one time or another.

My cubing life:
I am a complete and utter newbie when it comes to cubing. I first solved a cube on Jan. 13, 2013. My younger brother was into twisty puzzles since high school and started speedcubing a few months ago. He had a few cubes with him when we were together for a family occasion, and I started playing around with it. I then learned to solve it using badmephisto's beginner's method. That was fun, but I almost immediately got bored and wanted something more challenging. So I had my brother show me some more "advanced" techniques, and started learning F2L that same day. In my experience, that worked out very well for me. If the beginner's method seems a little too simple, then there's no reason to put off learning F2L straight from the start, in my opinion.

Like any hobby I get into, I am obsessive about cubing. I enjoy it quite a bit, and spend a lot of my free time practicing. I primarily do 3x3, but I've started getting into bigger cubes and megaminx. I haven't started trying to really gain speed with those puzzles, but they are a nice distraction when I feel burnt out on 3x3 or I feel like things are becoming a little stagnant. I also do some OH drills to build up speed and strength in my left hand (right-handed but feel more comfortable with my LH for OH), but haven't really focused on it yet.

I solve using CFOP, although I've played around with ZZ method and Roux. I would one day like to be competent in most of the major speedsolving methods, but I want to attain a decent speed with CFOP before moving on to something else. I know full PLL, and am currently using 2-look OLL. I don't plan on adding OLL algorithms until I'm ~20secs. I might learn the dot algs because 2-looking them is annoying. The first 2-3 weeks of cubing, I focused almost exclusively on F2L. I would do the cross, finish the 2 layers, and then scramble and start again. And again. And again. I think it helped me out a lot, especially considering the importance of F2L for any solve.

anyway, my current PBs, at a little under 2 months since I started cubing. The single PB is for a full solve, I don't like to include lucky solves that include skips, at least for now:
single/ao5/ao12
23.67/32.34/34.15

At this point I'm fairly regularly sub-35. The sub-30 solves are somewhat uncommon, but are becoming more and more frequent.

My main goals for right now are:
1) cut down on cube rotations and unnecessary moves. Just be more efficient. Also, try to maintain a steady speeds with no pauses.
2) Learn and incorporate F2L algs for annoying and difficult cases. I've been using intuitive F2L almost exclusively, but I feel it's time to make some cases more efficient.
3) Look ahead! Look ahead! Look ahead!

anyway, that's me. And if there's anyone in Oregon, please let hit me up. I would love to know other cubers in the area, and would LOVE to go to a competition around here. Apparently, the nearest ones are in Northern California, which is just a bit too far.

Yes, long it certainly is. That's why I need to find some cubers in Oregon! I checked cubing USA and there are only 4 people listed in all of Oregon. It's looking like I'll have to drive up to Seattle if I want to go to a comp. The world championship in Las Vegas might also be an interesting option, I have family there so I might be able to go to the competition while visiting them.

I really should participate in the race to sub-30 thread. I'll take the time this weekend to do those scrambles. I'll be happy with anything sub-35. Even though it's not a competition, I'm sure the fact that I'll be sharing the times will make me a little anxious.

As an update, I was doing a lot of solves and was having trouble between F2L pairs. I think my TPS has increased significantly over the past couple of weeks, and as a result, following cubies is getting harder and harder to do. I took a breath, decided to really focus on following pairs and turning slowly with a steady and consistent speed...immediately broke my ao5 and ao12 PBs. 31.57/32.96. There were a few sub-30's thrown in too, which hadn't been occurring that often previously. Just goes to show how important that aspect of solving is.

Wow another cuber from Oregon???? I'm at OSU (in Corvallis) - I'm far slower than you :) And there have been a few comps in Washington and there will be at least one this summer probably (or before summer) in Astoria :) Anyway, welcome :)

Tarantula's are scary.

Yay, a competition in Oregon! Astoria is pretty far from Eugene, but I'll definitely make the trip if it's the only competition around. I want that official WCA profile!

So it's been a while since I made any updates on my cubing. I'm very close to breaking that sub-30 threshold, and it seems like every other day I'm breaking one or more of my pbs. I also recently got my first sub-30 ao50 and ao100. I have no idea what my pbs are for them, most of my timing is done on my iphone and it doesn't keep track of those unfortunately. I've had a few sub-21 solves, and I'm getting oh so close to that sub-20 single, but it has been eluding me! Yesterday I got a 20.xx that felt slow as I was solving it. If only I knew how fast I was going, maybe I would've been just a little bit faster. Or more likely, I would've gotten a lock-up and been much slower.

PBs (3/26/12):
single: 20.15 (full step)
mo3: 24.73
mo5: 25.62
mo12: 27.51
ao5: 25.69
ao12: 27.62

I started going through my F2L cases, and I'm finding that some of my cases are very efficient from one orientation, but from others it's very inefficient and I end up rotating the cube much more than necessary. I'm systematically going through all of the F2L cases from every orientation right now, finding the ones that need work and am adding them to the arsenal. I imagine my times will be a bit slower because of this, but in the long run, it should help a lot.

I've been doing some 4x4 lately and finally got a few sub-2:00 solves. I'm still using reduction with 3-2-2-2-3 edge pairing. I want to learn Yau, but all of my 'cubing work' time has been spent working on F2L and other ways to make my 3x3 more efficient. I figure once I'm faster at 4x4 (maybe 1:30) learning Yau will make a larger difference. Right now, my issues with 4x4 are almost completely about look ahead, so whichever method I use won't make too much of a difference.

Finally, I've ordered a few cubes lately (note to self, I should make a cube collection post some time). I ordered an Ultimate Lubix Zhanchi, mostly out of curiosity. I wanted to see if the modding they did actually produced any noticeable differences, and honestly, I had low expectations. To my surprise, it is noticeably smoother and lighter in it's turning while still maintaining that crisp Zhanchi feel. It quickly became my main cube. I've since been experimenting with modding on my other cubes. I have another Zhanchi that I've done the 48 point edge mod, Izo's center piece mod, and sanded down the part of the corner that faces the core (where all three pieces meet at the bottom of the stalk). I plan on modding the corner pieces a bit more too. I definitely see some noticeable benefits to the these mods, and plan on continuing to mod my cubes in the future. I also ordered a FangCun that should arrive today, which I'm pretty excited about trying.

Anyone have some mods that they recommend?

edit: and just like that, I post my pbs, and them immediately after I break them.

When do you have a comp? I have one tomorrow haha. I'm getting a WCA profile. Most likely it's "2013PARE01" lol. What do you think would be yours?

If I did exactly 3 sub-30 avg50s I would consider myself to be sub-30. You'll break that in no time, the hard part is breaking the 25 second barrier, which I'm facing right now :( Lookahead is the most important thing here. without lookahead sub-30 may be possible, but sub-25 is impossible. Don't get discouraged though. And, my PB was 20.30 for a month and a half before I finally got a sub-20 solve haha

Exactly! Avoiding cube rotations, avoiding unnecessary moves and being able to insert pairs from different angles too are important parts of F2L. If you want, check out www.cubeloop.com 's F2L page. It lists algs from all the 4 angles possible just in case you want them. It's mostly intuitive anyway.

I've been doing some 4x4 lately and finally got a few sub-2:00 solves. I'm still using reduction with 3-2-2-2-3 edge pairing. Great! I still haven't received my 4x4 :(

Lubix Zhanchis rock. I have tried out a friend's once and it feels different from the stock Zhanchi. It feels smoother and lighter, exactly as you said. I did the 48 edge point mod to my Zhanchi not a few days ago and it had a great effect on my cube. If you want more mods, check out Rishi Doshi's "7 mods I did to my Zhanchi" video on YouTube.

Congrats once again. I too break PBs immediately after posting, I dunno why :P

Time for an update. First thing's first. I've been CRUSHING my pbs lately. I finally broke the sub-20 single barrier. A few days ago I had a 16.98 PLL skip, and just like that, the sub-20s started coming. I got another sub-20 PLL skip the following day, and then the next day I got a few full step sub-20s. And now I'm getting a few sub-20s even on my off days. Something about seeing a sub-20 time feels pretty darn good.

Current PBs (4/8/12)
single lucky: 16.98
single NL: 17.36
mo3: 21.63
ao5: 21.89
ao12: 23.47

PB ao50 and ao100 has got to be somewhere around 26. I had an off day and my current ao50 is 26.48

Oh wow, I just noticed, my ao50 is faster than my pb ao12 from a week ago!

When do you have a comp? I have one tomorrow haha. I'm getting a WCA profile. Most likely it's "2013PARE01" lol. What do you think would be yours?

I saw the videos from your competition. Fantastic solves! It looks like you did really well, congratulations! A sub-25 average is impressive, especially given how long you've been cubing. I gotta say, you've provided a lot of motivation for me when it comes to cubing. I'm constantly trying to catch up to your times, and whenever I think I'm getting close, you're still a couple seconds ahead of me.

There's supposed to be a competition in Oregon sometime early summer/late spring. I will definitely try to make it to that one. I also want to go to World Championships in Las Vegas in July. There are so many great cubers that are going to be there, it's just too good to pass up. Plus, I have family in Las Vegas, so I can spend time with them while I'm there.

My WCA profile will be either 2013BAHR01 or 2013BAHR02, it's nice because my last name is only four letters. Whether I get 01 or 02 will depend on whether or not my brother gets to a competition before me this year. I'm guessing he will since there's a comp in his hometown later this month. Oh well, there aren't too many 02s out there, I'll wear it with pride.

I'm feeling that barrier right now, and lookahead does seem to make ALL the difference. On the days that I'm cubing well, it feels like I can just see the whole cube at once. It's almost like F2L pairs jump out at me, without any effort on my part at all. Bad days, I feel like I'm struggling to find them. I've been doing more slow solves, striving to find the most efficient pairing and insertion at all times, and constantly focus on finding pairs while they're being inserted. It's helping, but lookahead seems to be the hardest thing to learn.

Thanks for the link, I've definitely gone through a lot of that site now.

I used that video for inspiration for modding my cubes. I think some of them are a little overkill, but 48pt edge mod, and the CPM I wholeheartedly recommend. I don't like going to my unmodded Zhanchis now as they feel a little more clicky and catchy.

I set up my FangCun and have been using it a lot. I did the CPM, 48pt edge mod, and some corner modding (similar to the vcube 5 mod I think). I switched out the hardware for Dayan core/screws/springs. The FangCun springs really are awful. The cube is so tight with them. Once the hardware has been switched out, the cube is very nice. The center caps pop off like crazy, so stuffing paper in there is absolutely necessary. Overall, I prefer the Zhanchi. The plastic feels...cheaper in the FangCun. Which isn't necessarily bad for cubing, but the cube just feels a different because of it. It's almost like the Zhanchi is sliding on ice, while the FangCun is sliding on butter. Both are very smooth, but I prefer the feel of the Zhanchi. The FangCun still is a great cube though. I prefer it to GuHong, Lingyun, or Lunhui (not to mention the Panshi which I really really dislike). That actually might say more about how much I love the Zhanchi, the only cube that comes close is a complete knock-off. Side note, I'm looking forward to the ShuangRen. I really doubt it'll replace my main, but something that gives Dayan a run for it's money is very exciting.

Right now, my main is a black Zhanchi modded with 48pt edge and CPM, my backup is my black Lubix Zhanchi, and the black FangCun is my third favorite. All are stickered with Cubesmith half-brights + bright blue. I absolutely LOVE this sticker set. I just ordered a few half-bright and half-bright plus bright blue sets from Cubesmith. It might be placebo, but I feel like my recognition really is better with half-bright stickers.

What are you talking about? Your pb avg5 is better than mine :D it pleases me knowing I have been one of the reasons for you getting faster, albeit being a somewhat indirect one.

The comp was a great success, I got a sub-24 avg when I was aiming for a sub-27 one. But 2x2, OH, and 3x3 Round 2 were all phails haha. You'll enjoy your first comp, trust me :D

I'm not into stickers and stuff but I have restickered my Zhanchi with a Cubesmith standard set. The yellow is brighter, which I love :D

I haven't done the corner mod yet, I'll do it when I get some time.

You could try OH. The main reason why I love it is you can lookahead like a boss :D Also in CBC's dual commentary with asmallkitten (Phil Yu), the latter said OH helps in improving lookahead for 2H.

All the best, hope to see you in the Race to sub-20 next week :D

EDIT: What was that "sub-25 avg is good especially for how long you've bern cubing" thing? You started 2 whole weeks after me! P

Ah, that ao5 was a fluke. I'm sure if we raced you'd beat me 9 out of 12 times. And about your comp times, I would be happy with a sub-30 official average right now. While that's pretty easy to achieve when I'm at home, the competition setting is a whole different thing. I think a sub-25 ao5 in your first competition after less than four months is pretty good work. I won't be surprised if I get a couple DNFs from nerves alone.

I've started doing OH solves as well, but I'm pretty bad at the moment. I still can't break a minute. I haven't spent too much time on it yet, it's going to be the next thing I focus on. I also get OH amnesia really bad. By my first comp I want to get the best 3x3 time possible for me, and compete in as many puzzles as I can without completely embarrassing myself. I'm hoping that I will be able to do 3x3, 4x4, 2x2, pyraminx, and 3x3 OH. 4x4 and OH are going to be the hardest to get ok times at.

Trust me, the 1 min barrier for OH won't even take you week to break. I guess there's still some time left for your first comp, sub-20 average maybe?

Sent from my A75 using Tapatalk 2

Got my first sub-1 min OH last night. 53.69! It feels like it's taking forever to get comfortable with OH, but my times are steadily regressing. I'm going to have to "re-learn" all of my PLLs for OH, which I'm not looking forward to.

Sub-20 ao5 for my first comp would be great. It's my current difficult but realistic goal. I like to set high standards for myself. If I have to adjust them to something more reasonable later, then that's fine, but I'd rather set my sights high.

My goals right now for my first comp (probably worlds in July)
3x3: sub-20 avg
2x2: sub-7 avg
4x4: sub-1:30 avg
3x3OH: sub-40 avg
Pyra: sub-15 avg

I think all of those are achievable if I work very hard. More realistically, I probably won't achieve most of them, but I'd rather set my sights a little too hard than too easy. Pyraminx should be pretty easy to get, but I'm not a fan of the puzzle and don't want to spend a lot of time practicing it.

Astoria comp will be June 8 it looks like :) Not on WCA website yet but I'm guessing soon. I'm also trying to organize an Oregon comp with some other people - would be either in Corvallis or Portland/Beaverton area.

Oh nice! I'll definitely try to make the Astoria comp. A Corvallis/Portland competition sounds awesome too! Please keep me updated, I'll be checking the WCA site as well. I don't have a ton of free time, but if you ever need any help in setting up competitions you can drop me a line.

Personal progress update:

I've been doing a lot of 4x4 and OH in addition to my 3x3 work. I am really really starting to enjoy OH. It's still very satisfying when I do a solve OH, which is nice after feeling like 3x3 2H is no longer impressive for its own sake. I finally am starting to feel more comfortable with my OH turning. And those who say it helps with lookahead, that is certainly true. I find myself doing F2L cases in new and more efficient ways, simply because I'm forced to be more efficient because rotating is so much more uncomfortable and time consuming in OH.

I also just ordered another SS 4x4 v4. I would like to re-do the Florian and Konsta mod, I think I overmodded the Florian mod just a bit. I'm sure I could do a better job the second time around. I forgot how bad a SS 4x4 out of the box feels. So many lockups! Interestingly, my inner layers are hardly locking up at all. But the outer layers...ouch! I did some comparison solves, I averaged ~2:10 with the out of the box cube, and ~1:45 with my modded cube. Big difference. I would highly recommend doing both the Florian and Konsta mods on your SS 4x4s. The 3x3 stage is SO much better on my modded cube. Granted, this is comparing against a cube that still hasn't been fully broken in, but the difference is so massive that I doubt it could ever come close.

I've had five straight days of sub-25 means of 50. Sub-25 I am! Going from sub-30 to sub-25 was relatively painless. Plus, a sub-24 mo50!! My lookahead has been getting so much better lately. I think a lot of it comes from knowing my F2L cases so much better. Also, my PB single was done with my dog (an adorable little long-haired chihuahua) sitting on my lap and licking my face! It could've been a 15.xx if he wasn't begging for loves!
