Hello everyone,

after constantly reading in this forum for more than a year now i thought that it's about time to
become a member and introduce myself.

First of all i want to thank all of you for sharing your knowledge about cubing.
I learned so many things from this forum already, it really is a great resource.

My name is Ingo, i'm 45 years old and i live in Germany.
I got my first Rubik's cube in 1982. I was able to solve it in something like 90 seconds,
but after a few months i got bored with it and lost interest. I used a method that was published in a
german print magazine, don't remember the name. Looking at it now it was a very slow method,
but back then i thought it's the only method in existence.

I rediscovered cubing in May 2012, while accidently watching a Youtube video about speedcubes.
I decided to try out a stickerless Zhanchi and i was absolutely blown away by the turning quality
and speed of it. Compared to my old Rubik's this Zhanchi was like heaven. Of course i had forgotten
how to solve it, but i was hooked, so i checked out some tutorials and learned to solve it with lbl.
That gave me a real buzz. I started learning f2l, 2-look oll, 1-look pll, bought lots of other 3x3's,
big cubes, shapemods, cuboids, basically all kinds of twisty puzzles and got really addicted.
Now i have quite a big collection and i add more all the time, as i just love to try out new cubes.
This year i managed to learn 1-look oll. Compared to properly fast speedcubers i'm kind of slow.
My pb is 18.06 seconds (full-step) and my typical average is around 25 seconds, because i have
almost no lookahead and sometimes my recognition sucks badly too, so my times are inconsistent.
Usually i take my age as an excuse for that hahaha. In 2012 i just wanted to be sub 1 minute on
every 3x3 solve, now my goal is a sub 20 average. Sadly i don't have much time to practice properly,
but i'm patient and i don't mind if it takes some months to reach that goal.
I'm not timing my solves on other cubes, i just solve them casually at a relaxed speed.
My favorite puzzles besides 3x3 are 4x4, 7x7, 4x4x6 and 3x3x5.

Thanks again ... and happy cubing :)

Ingo

Thanks.
4x4 is for sure the next thing that i will speedsolve. I'm using Hoya for 4x4, as i find it easier than Yau.
Out of curiosity i timed three solves on 4x4 last week. The fastest solve was something like 2:30 minutes.

Hello, welcome to the forum!
You history looks almost like mine. I'm 41 now, and started cubing when I was a schoolboy.
Your progress gives me some good hope, I start to believe that age is not such a critical barrier :)

Yes, thats true. I read your introduction post and we have a similar cubing history indeed.
I think that age can be a critical barrier, if you want to get really fast, like sub10 or something on 3x3.
But sub20 seems possible for people at our age, of course with enough practice.

Sub20 sounds absolutely fantastic to me now. I'd be completely satisfied if one day I reach 22.95 - this was a world record at the time when I read my first article about Rubik's cube.

I thought the same a while ago and then suddenly i got to that point. You will get there too if you keep cubing, trust me.

Welcome. Currently my father is approximate 60 years and solve the cube using beginners method in 1 minute. I am pestering him to learn f2l and stuff but he says he is happy just solving the cube. He has improved a lot and age is probably not a barrier for sub 20 :)

Hahaha, my father is over 70 and he doesn't care at all about solving. Whenever he sees me solving he shakes his head, because he
cannot understand that a grown person likes playing with toys. But thats just him, he doesn't understand the appeal of solving
puzzles in general and he is not very patient.

Welcome! Have you considered going to a competition in Germany? There's always cool people, usually some of your age as well.

Hello Emanuel,
thank you. I haven't considered to compete yet. First i want to go to a competition as a spectator, to get a feel for how a competition works.

Welcome! My father is 67 and though he won't be bothered to play with it now because he says he's forgotten all the LL algs, he's always interested in me doing the cube and asks when I'll go to competition again. (I first knew how to solve the cube because he taught me back in the 80s.)
