I've been following and reading topics on this forum for approximately one year and I really like it because you're always up to date with newest infos, records, releases and so on. So finally, I decided to create my own account to be able to participate in some discussions.

Well, here's my introduction:
As said in the title, my name is Alex and I live in the capital of Austria, which is Vienna.
I am 22 years old and I'm studying physics at the University of Technology in Vienna.
My hobbies are playing soccer, beachvolleyball, billard, bouldering, being with friends and speedcubing ;)
My first encounter with a rubiks cube was in summer 2010, when I found an original rubiks cube made in hungary in 1980 which my father had somewhere "hidden" in a cupboard. I decided to learn how to solve it and soon found pages on the internet about speedcubing. As the layers of the 1980's cube were VERY hard to turn, in 2011 I bought (I think it was called) a SpeedCubeUltimate 2 (which maybe wasn't the best idea).

My collection now consists of:
2x2: WitTwo
3x3: ZhanChi (main), Lunhui, SCU2, original
4x4: ShengShou, SCU
5x5: ShengShou, Eastsheen
6x6: V-Cube
7x7: V-Cube
8x8: ShengShou
9x9: Shengshou
Megaminx: MF8(v3)
Pyraminx: Speed Pyraminx Ultimate
SQ-1: MF8(v2)
Rubiks Magic
Mirror Cube
Rex Cube
Rubiks World (2x2)

I don't have a lot of time to practise. So, actually I do maybe 3-5 untimed solves a day with my 3x3 and only sometimes I do timed sessions with 12 or more solves. I only touch the other cubes extremely rarely. (I solved the 7x7x7, 8x8x8 and 9x9x9 only once)

My method for 3x3x3 is CFOP with intuitive F2L and 4LLL.
My current PBs for the 3x3x3 are | single: 16,36 | 3/5: 22,82 | 10/12: 24,54 | My global Average is at ~27-28 seconds.

I should maybe mention that I really admire blind-cubing. I learned it once last summer, but as I said, unfortunately it is too time-consuming for me to practise, so that I have not done a single solve since then. (my PB is 5:17,69 after 2-3 weeks learning and ~15 solves)

You can watch the video of my 3x3 PB here (was quite lucky... 44 moves fullstep... I know, I have a very bad look ahead and big pauses):

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! I'll be glad to answer ;)

Greetings, Alex

Hallo Alex!

Nice to see another speedcuber at the TU. I'm studying mathematics (4. semester). If you like, we can meet sonetime. I am usually in the Freihaus (mensa or learning room).

Last december I entered for the TU for the world-interunivercity-cube-relay (Link). For this, I asked a lot of people, if they could solve a rubiks cube. There are actually a bunch of students, who can solve it, but very few, who can solve it fast (sub 1 minute). You could have been a huge help :p.

There are regularly cube meetings in vienna. Some guy meet nearly every friday at the millenium city (unless someone is on a competition). Most of them are a bit younger (and faster) than you, but it's always fun and you can learn a lot of the others. You're welcome to join us. Just write me a day before, so I can tell you, if there is a meeting or not.

There are also a few competitions in austria. We had one this weekend (in vienna). These competitions are fun for everyone. You probably won't win anything, but you get a bunch of friends and meet cuber from all over europe. There will be one in Linz in september (maybe), and one in vienna in december (ausrian nationals). And maybe a competition only for big-cubes during summer.

Yours
Jakob

heh, you were 2 days too late to post this. As Jakob already said, the Austrian Open took place this weekend in Vienna :)

I'm Stefan from Vorarlberg, the current holder of the 3x3 national records. I don't live in Vienna though, but in Switzerland.

There is quite a community in Vienna which will gladly welcome you. Just join them in one of their meetings when you have the time.

I am looking forward to hopefully meet you at a competition sometime ;)

Hi Jakob, hi Stefan,
As I said, i’ve been following news in the speedcubing community for quite a while. So, I knew that there was a competition in Vienna this weekend. I actually would have wanted to join it, but I play soccer (I am a goalkeeper) in an amateur team. So, we have our matches almost every weekend, also last Saturday. This is maybe the reason why I have not been to any competition yet (adding to the fact that it seems there are just very few competitions in Austria at all).
You both have great records, I have to say. I think, I’ll never be that good (I definitely started cubing too late, but having fun with it is most important).

@Jakob:
Cool that you are also at the TU! I’m in my 6th semester and I’m also usually in the Freihaus, sometimes at Atominstitut. So, we could definitely meet sometime. A good friend of mine who studies physics in my semester, can also solve the cube in about 30 seconds but has not touched a cube for one year. Would have been fun, if we entered this world-interuniversity-cube-relay.
Maybe, I’ll join one of your cube meetings in the next weeks. Sounds fun! And I know, most speedcubers are younger and faster than I am, but as you said, I could definitely learn a lot.
