Hi there. I’m really happy I found this place.

My dad taught me to solve the 3x3x3 a year or two after it was invented. I solved it using the layered approach with a minimum number of algorithms. I got to the point where I could solve it in 1-2 minutes and sometimes sub 1 min. I’ve been playing with cubes occasionally since.

About a year ago my wife gave me a 5x5x5 and I learned how to solve it.

Lately I bought a few modern cubes and have seen how much the cubes have improved and it has really gotten me motivated for getting faster. I’ve taught myself the CFOP method going by intuitive F2L and the 2Look approach though I still have to look up some of the algos on a cheat sheet.

My current goal is to get comfortable with the 2Look approach and then go from there towards full CFOP.

Welcome to the forum! You can get pretty fast with 4 look last later and it’s a pretty manageable alg set if you can carve our time for consistent practice. Good luck on your CFOP journey.

You are totally right about modern hardware, cubes are just so good today compared to even 5-10 years ago!

There is a thread specifically for older cubers that you may find helpful or interesting. https://www.speedsolving.com/threads/older-cubers-discussions.37405/

Awesome! I'm always glad to see a new member of the forums! Once you are comfortable with the NxN events you should try out some other puzzles like the Megaminx and Square-1.
Hmm... You spread the news of the MGC 4x4 and 7x7, but you're back to recommending squan no matter what. "What's the best Ab Perm?"
"Square-1."

As an older cuber the “puzzling” side of this hobby can be very fun opposed to speed. Sitting for hours racking your brain how to intuitively solve something is quite enjoyable too. Some of my favorite shape mods and misc. puzzles include the Fisher cube, windmill cube, mirror blocks, Redi cube & non cubic 2x2x3 & 3x3x2. The and Dino cubes are pretty easy puzzles too if you just want to explore twisty puzzles some more. Cheers

Well technically you can manipulate 2 J perms into a A perm during a solve that can also help force a EP skip if you have something like J or N on bottom

And yes, the MGC7 is still important.

Well, nothing's changed. Everything is either MGC or Squan.
