Hi all,

I've been lurking for a couple months and decided to take the plunge and join the forum.

My name is Dan, I'm 31, and I live in Winnipeg, Canada. I solved the Rubik's cube for the first time about 5 months ago with the beginners method. A couple months later (still oblivious to the world of speedcubing) I was casually solving the cube in about 2:30. Then something happened... I saw a YouTube video of some crazy Australian solving the cube in 5.66 seconds! I was in shock. "How is that even possible?" I said to myself. After some frantic Googleing I discovered a whole community of these phenomenal people who can somehow solve the cube in mere seconds. I wasted no time in ordering my first proper speedcube, a Shengshou Aurora. My first solve with my Aurora was under 2 minutes! That was it, I was hooked.

My desk is now covered with various twisty puzzles, and the collection continues to grow. My kids (two girls, 4 and 7) think it's cool and my wife has been pretty accepting of my addiction. I suppose there are worse things I could be spending my time/money on. :)

I use CFOP with 2-look OLL for 3x3, but I hit a frustrating wall at 40 seconds a while ago and shifted my attention to other type of cubes. I recently started focusing on 3x3 again and just set my first ever sub-30 average of 5 with my new MoYu AoLong.

My ultimate goal is to be sub-20, but I feel like I'm running into another wall and I might need to take a break from 3x3 for a while again.

So, that's my story. I'm happy to finally be a part of the community.

Welcome then! Have fun, and enjoy the incredible resources that you'll find here.

Welcome Dan,

If you are looking for help with your addiction, this is the wrong place. This is like an AA meeting where people bring liquor and talk about other brands of liquor and compare tastes and opinions lol. But seriously, nice to have you on the forums. And don't give up on 3x3, just do less timed solves to get your f2l to where you can do in mindlessly. That is what I am trying to do, and it has taken some time, but I am finally seeing a little progress. Plus, most of the common methods on larger cubes have a 3x3 stage, so when you're working on 3x3, you're working on most larger cubes as well. Regardless of what you decide, just have fun. Join some forum competitions, and practice. Can't go wrong.

Welcome! I'm also a cubeaholic named Dan. Congrats on your first sub-30 Ao5 :) Remember solving isn't just about practicing to make your hands faster. Make sure you are using good PLL and F2L algs, and keep learning new things :) Solving is a combination of speed and efficiency, so keep looking for ways to be more efficient, and experiment with the cube using slow solves. Things will get faster!

Hi. I'm Jim, but you can call me Jim. I've never drank cubeahol before.

Anyway, welcome to the forums! Plenty of help to be found around here, and I'm sure you'll like it. Plenty of us started from the same point, so progression isn't impossible. Just keep trying, guy!
