Hi guys, I got into cubing in June when I bought a Shengshou 5x5 on Amazon. I already knew how to solve the 3x3 using commutators and conjugates (I had memorized no algorithms) and so I wanted to see how much of a challenge a 5x5 would be. My first solve on it took multiple days, because I couldn't figure out how to fix parity, and I was basically solving three pieces at a time. I eventually figured out how to solve parity completely on my own (do Rw, then it is solvable by commutators and conjugates even if you have to go back and fix centers) but then wanted to learn how to solve it quickly. My times dropped a bunch after I learned to solve centers intuitively, the edge pair, (last 4 edges I still use commutators and conjugates) and then solve like a 3x3. I did the Florian mod on my cube a couple days ago and I'm currently averaging around 5 minutes.

Once my times on the 5x5 started to plateau I wanted a 3x3 cube to play with. My brother used to have a Rubik's brand he put Vaseline in, so after seeing what it did to the stickers I got a Dayan Guhong Stickerless. I learned the Petrus method and soon got down to 1 minute. I then abandoned Petrus LL (it just doesn't make sense) and switched to Fridrich 4LL, and then Fridrich 2LL (7 OLL's and 21 PLL's.) Just last night I learned Roux (it makes so much sense, everything is intuitive to me except orienting the corners!) but I think I'll stick with Petrus, as I like it better. I also just lubed my cube yesterday because I got differential oil in the mail, and it is the best thing I've ever felt. (That's actually why I learned Roux, because I could actually use the M slice!)

So yeah, I currently averaging 40-45 seconds on the 3x3, and that's about it. I'm glad to be here!

With Petrus it didn't really do anything, but it allowed me to solve the last 4 corners in Roux with no help whatsoever. The problem is that it's very time-consuming if you need to use it to orient pieces (It's possible to orient and permute simultaneously, but I've never been very good at that) and it's usually faster to use intuition on permutation unless there are only a few pieces left to solve and you can't just take advantage of unsolved pieces.

Hi :) welcome to the forums, our times are quite similar (36.08 AO5 28.36 PB) would love to grow with you on here, and see how we compare :D

Well I just got a PB of 28.73 and an ao5 of 33.30 :P It was really weird because after I got those averages I started getting like 45's and 50's.... like I psyched myself out I guess. What method do you use?
