Hey everyone, I have been cubing 'seriously' for about 2 months now since I switched to roux. I average about 21 secs- well at least that's what my last average said but my range is quite large- from 15-25. My record is 12.57 but there was a ridiculously easy 7 move first block and permute M slice skip. Most of the above average times are because I find the L orientation CMLLs very hard to recognise fast- any tips?
Since I live in the UK, I haven't got access to good cubes, so I'm still surviving with a 5 year old rubik's brand which is pretty fast but requires constant lubing. I have got 6 puzzles: A broken eastsheen 2x2x2, rubik's brand, square-1, qj 5x5x5 and a mirror blocks. My lubricant is quite bad too, it makes the cube sticky and only gets good after 2 days.
So, what methods do you guys use? And what are the advantages/disadvantages of them?

Welcome!

You should definately take a look at Waffles Roux thread.

My "main" method: CFOP
Pro: relatively easy to get fast with
Con: relatively boring

Main with " because I actually hardly ever use it. But I do use it in comps as it is my fasted method.

My preferred methods (for fun cubing):
Petrus, Heise, keyhole, CF, EF, full intuitive
Still have to start with Roux...

Yo

Ha, i'm still rocking a rubik's brand cube too it's pretty smooth but terrible for lock-ups and popping - I have also just recently become serious about speedsolving but can't boast about solve times just yet... PB 38.xx :( (pretty sure i have done faster solves but they weren't timed) so I will be checking out what cube to buy in the very near future...

I use Petrus for its own merits but also because I am too much of a wimp to memorise the CFOP algs.

+
Low move counts (45 if you're good)
Can really help you "understand" the cube because it encourages intuitive solves
Sexy blockbuilding :)

Some people say it's hard to learn (I personally found it easy to learn but challenging to get faster)
Colour-neutrality is more important I think with Petrus which takes time and patience

that's about it without going into too much detail, if you're ever interested i'm more than happy to help out (saying that there are 1000's of people more qualified than me and Lars Petrus' website is pretty good anyway)

Yeah petrus is awesome- I use it for one handed because I don't want to murder my table... No actually, it's because I find table moves (M moves) awkward. I really don't know how waffle does it so well.

welcome to speedsolving

my main method is CFOP too, for the same reasons as Zane_C >.<

but my casual method is Roux

Pros: slice moves <3 looks more awesome at last step if doing it fast (lol)
cons: if you're bad at blockbuilding, you got some training to do (like me >.<)
