Hello there! My name's Stripy and I'm from Reading, England. I first solved the cube about 8 years ago now using one of the only YouTube videos on the subject at the time.

Only got interested in solving fast when the Zhanchi came out and learnt CFOP in February (so it's been quite gradual). I've been in the background of YouTube and have been checking the site for a while for news on new records but finally decided to stick my toe in the water properly (and not just dab it with a damp flannel). Never been to a competition but would love to at some point and am unsure whether I could get to UK nationals this year.

I'm a student studying in Salford (Human Biology) and will be heading back soon.

I have a small YouTube channel (videos will get better soon, I promise). I have a handmade Fisher cube nearly done and some review ideas.

I'm really looking forward to my time here. :D

Welcome, always good to have more UK cubers. With regards to competitions, there is also the Guildford Open in October, its already full up but you could add your name to the waiting list and you might get lucky. I think there's still plenty of spots open for the UK championship as well.

Good to know. Unfortunately I can't go to the Guildford one as I'll be back at uni by then and don't fancy travelling that far after only just arriving. As for nats, I'd love to go and I'm working out whether I can get to Bristol and back to Manchester in one day. How long do national championships go on for? I guess not all the way into the evening.

I see there's also been one in Manchester in January. Is that one on every year?

Thanks for letting me know though. :D

Nationals goes on for 3 days, Friday evening when they are doing FMC and MultiBLD as these events take the longest. The rest of the events will probably run from about 9-5 on Sat and Sun with a break for lunch in between. If you do go the championships you might be want to consider staying in a hotel/hostel/friend Saturday night and enter for as much events as you can, that way you can make the most of it.

I don't think they do one in Manchester every year, seems to vary each year where they have
competitions, you can see a list of past ones here - http://www.ukca.org/competitions/past-competitions

Welcome. Plenty of good info here. Enjoy your time.

I suspect the events will run til later than 5pm and may start earlier than 9am too. You can see the schedule from the last competition, ABHC 2016, at http://cubecomps.com/live.php?cid=1715. Obviously the schedule will be different for each competition, but I'd expect some events to start before 9am and finish after 5pm, particularly with ABHC not having some events (and the number of competitors already registered for the UK Championship being about twice as many as were at ABHC.

Thanks for letting me know. The more I'm looking into it, the less likely it'll be possible for me to get there and I don't fancy staying overnight. I think I'll wait for the next comp. I've only just got into speedsolving proper and I don't do too many other events. After all, I've got all of 2017 to look forward to and there's bound to be some I can get to at some point.
