Hello all!

I am a 30 year old swede that is brand-spanking-new to the world of cubeing/speedcubing.
As a kid I used to play with this thing but just end up doing the old "reassembly solve" haha. So I've never actually solved it like it should be solved.
I started this Friday when my cubes arrived in the mail (I didn't even own one, not even the original, shocking I know) so I have a LONG way to go
but I am committed to reach my goal on solving one standard 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube within 30 seconds. Why? I'm not sure, maybe its just an well placed
obsession or a thing on my bucket list but its happening nevertheless :)

I'll see you all in the "I need heeeeeelp-threads" here ;)

Some other info that might be a fun read:

I bought an Dayan Zhanchi 3x3x3 cube that is so different from what I remember the old cube to be.
And one 3x3x3 Cube4u that was more like the original in my opinion.

And this is my list of goals as of now:

  • Solve it with notes under 2 minutes Check! (12-10-12)
  • Solve it without notes (no time, beginner methods) Check! (12-10-16)
  • Solve it under 2 minutes Check! 1min 34sek (12-10-23)
  • Solve it under 1 minutes Check! 56sek (12-11-07)
  • Solve it with advanced methods (Methods used by “speed-solvers”) (SemiCheck! Only CFOP so far)
  • Solve it with advanced methods under 30 seconds! (Main goal!)
  • Have fun, be frustrated! (Think I can already check this one off haha)

Addition; I just had to time myself to let you all know how far I really have on my journey.
3m 09sec (awkward silence...):o This was with no notes and beginners methods on the first 2 layers and notes
on the last layer where I did 2-look OLL and PLL (Haha I speak the lingo yo! right?)

Got any tips or ideas or something I need to think about or change? Reply and let me know!

anyway, see you all around! (Ill keep you guys updated with my progress if you want)

/Per

Welcome to the forum. ^^
sub-30 is not so hard if you practice. ;)

Thank you :)
I hope you are right. But at the moment it seem like its not possible.
Do you think anyone (with lots of practice ofc) can do under 30 sec?

I'd think so, I got sub-1min pretty fast but took a while to get sub-30, just make sure to practice and get more efficient in the steps.
A tip that may help you remember the algorithms, make rhymes out of them, that's what I did when I just started, although when I had done rhymes for all of them they had been memorized already while I was working on them...

The Race to Sub-30 worked as a great motivator for me when I felt I got stuck at 40 seconds, so try that out once you feel like you need that extra push.

Thanks for the reply!
And I think I know what you mean about rhythms. I kind of get the feeling that some can be grouped up and kind of "flow together" so to speak.
Great link you posted! That will surely give me the kick in the pants I need when I get under that first minute mark. But first and foremost I
have to get the OLL/PLL down. I still need notes to solve the last layer so I cant practice everywhere yet(which is what I want right now)
The beginner methods are OK now for the first layers and I have already started to slowly move into Fridrich F2L thanks to badmephisto's great tutorials on youtube. Not sure if I complicate things for myself by learning so much different stuff all at once. Maybe I should just learn one method, and practice on that?

Reached a few of my milestones today (and a few days ago). Today I solved the cube without any notes for the first time which makes me very happy. I used F2L and just a few OLL/PLL so the time is just awful. I'm even faster with beginner methods but its important for me that Ive reached this far with the "correct methods" only. Now I can start taking times and study even more algs.

I see what you said about sub 30 seeming imposible, the way I always made my goals seem realistic is to do 'imaginary solves' Shut your eyes and start the timer, you don't need to hold a cube, just imagine your self slowly forming the cross, then imagine yourself completing the first two layers, then oll and pll. It will feel like years, but when you stop the timer you will see that it is probably Half the time that you expected. A second is only fast when you are rushing, slow down and it's an eternity.

Nice to see even more swedish cubers on this forum!! Another tip is to go to some competitions! It's a lot of fun and it's the single most reason I cube. You just missed the Swedish Championships last week but there'll be more comps in the future. Mind if I ask where in Sweden you live?

Also, sub-30 isn't that hard. It just takes a lot of practice!

Im going to try this! I think you are right, because when I'm in a hurry(the few times I have tried to time myself) I mess up much more often and have trouble finding cubies and such.

Yea I think I register about the same day I saw a post about that. And I'm still very new to this so maybe next year! Even if I dont compete myself I think it could be fun to see and meet other solvers. I live on Gotland! :)

Then you at least not have as far as I have to the nearest comps. (I live in Norrbotten)

Welcome!

That may be true. But your cube-times still makes it more logical to even go to a tournament in the first place. Just timed myself doing F2L fridrich which I have learned to do now and with very few OLL/PPL algs I got 2.39.71 haha. I'm not sure I wanna be traveling anywhere to show of that time :P Altho it would be fun to meet other cubers and see live solves.

Tomorrow will be 2weeks since I started cubing and because I'm able to consistently solve it (yea its a big deal for me lol) I wanted to get some times recorded. And because I used Fridrich F2L and some OLL/PLL algs Im pretty happy that I now can solve it under 3min pretty often(over 3 is often when I can't find a cubie) The times differ because of my limited knowledge of the LL algs hence I can get lucky or I have to do them more then once. But still. This is where I am thus far.

I don't think that times matter for going to a competition. I guess it's just fun to meet other people. But I'm only 16, so I can't do it without permission from my parents.

Everyone has their own views about it. I never under stand this 'it's the taking part' thing, I don't enter things unless I have a chance of a podium plac, loosing doesn't interest me. But other people seem to enjoy loosing.

if you wanted to be concise you couldve just said you cant put up with being bad

Bad is subjective to comparison with others, I.e in competition. If I don't attend these, I can only compare myself to myself, in which I rate my self as on par with Jesus.

Gah! 1 second from reaching my 2min goal >_< It's moving forward tho, never even thought I would be able to solve it when I first started. Now it at least makes sense. Gotta learn more OLLs/PLLs now! and then some of them cool fingertricks you speeders use.

Finally did it. My new PB is 1:34:59 and yes it was lucky. Got my favorite algs. but I dont care haha. Now it's that elusive 1min to beat!
