I ordered a lanlan 2x2 as a gift for my brother from a company on Amazon, based in China. Here's the link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00...SY200_QL40&dpPl=1&dpID=41HE1HiKIuL&ref=plSrch

It eventually came after about a month and I'm almost certain it's not what I ordered. I wasn't expecting much for £2.70 but the right cube would be nice! The main giveaway was the lanlan having a distinctive colour scheme as purple replaces orange. My cube has the standard colour scheme. It didn't come in a box and has no logos but they sent a shengshou 2x2 guide. On further inspection it seems without taking it apart to be a shengshou 2x2 - 3 screws (same as lanlan), matte and textured stickers and almost square cube shape and size.

My question now is is there anyway I could conclusively determine whether the cube is also fake as well as the wrong brand?

It's difficult to tell as I know the lanlan/shengshou aren't great 2x2s but it's very slow (almost too slow to use finger tricks) compared to my Wittwo and can only corner cut up to about 10-20° one way.

Yep I got that. My brother's ten and probably more likely that he won't learn it at all than he will become a speedcuber so didn't want to break the banks.

This probably comes as a tough lesson, but you usually get what you pay for when it comes to cubes. Even if you definitely got a LanLan, it was still gonna suck.

An original Shengshou 2x2 (which costs only $1 more on thecubicle.us) is much better than the LanLan. You could probably find that or the Shengshou Aurora 2x2 from a UK speedcube store. Those are the cheapest 2x2's out that aren't entirely terrible.

Send a message to the seller and ask for a refund, saying that the item wasn't the same as what was advertised. If they refuse, you can post a complaint with amazon, which may or may not yield results.

One time I got a piece of crap 4x4 after paying for a shengshou. I asked for a refund, and they gave it to me within a day. They didn't even ask for the cube back.

A shengshou usually comes in a box. but if the stickers got texture i would also guess a shengshou. Cornercutting is not that good, but its usually turns quit well. Try to loosen the screws, it shut cut about 25° then, revers only a little. Also its weight shut be ~63,5gramm.
In my opinion they both are equally good. Like BaMiao said, ask for a refund. Tell them you wanted a lanlan you already own a shengshou or something and hope for the best. In my experience you would get a refund in no time on ebay, because a bad rating on a 2$ item is as bad as on a 200$ item, but amazone is a little different.
If he does not want to refund

Thanks dott, if that weight is correct that is really useful to know - will get the scales out tomorrow. Will contact the seller for a refund and see what they say.

For some reason I read this thread as 'God sent the wrong/fake cube?'.
