My 2nd thread, woo :D. Anyway, I've been cubing for basically a month, since last year I was just solving the cube for fun, not really taking anything serious. Well, I'm about to get my 1st order of stuff, (link at bottom with a bit of commentary) and I came upon this site. So I've registered, yadda yadda, and now I'm here. Since last year, I've lubed up my store-bought cube (with vasasline, due to my ignorance. I'm probably going to use Floor Polish that's somewhere around here, if Floor Polish =/= stuff used to wax floors), and it's decent, I can get around 58.32 on it...

I was wondering.. What are considered "good" times for a newbie?

My personal-best is 58.32 seconds, so... is that good for a noob?

Also, what are some good timers? I've tried calcubetimer and all the Java stuff for it, but it fails to work, and I'm thinking about the other java one that says something about cows or features a cow for the logo. any other timers? (I'd prefer a downloadable timer)

I'm getting my SpeedStacks timer soon, but I was wondering if there are any other timers that are free and work well, or compatible with said timer.

There is no real "good" standard. But to me, it will be different for others:

OK: sub-1
Decent: sub-40
Good: sub-30
Very Good: sub-20
Amazing: sub-15
Pro: sub-12

As for 58.32, that's pretty good for just a month, keep practicing and you'll get better.

Timers, cubetimer.com, and a speedstacks timer is really good.

A good time is better than your last one. Just compare yourself with yourself. If everyone went around comparing themselves with the current world record holder, it wouldn't be nearly as fun.

Although comparing your times with the current world record holder's times can provide motavation for getting faster. It does for me anyway.

Mmm, thanks for the advice, once again. I need to get up-to-date on speedcubing, I haven't touched my Cube in a while, but nearlyall of my center pieces fell off. <_< (white sticker, DON'T FAIL ME NOW!)

I'm starting to rise back up to sub1.30, so I'm gonna go read that thread on Fridrich.
