I don't use ebay too much, but doesn't it work like... you put in a max bid which is the highest you are willing to pay, but it automatically only outbids the next highest bidder? If thats true, then I can see it going from 200 or whatever it was to 1000 instantly if someone put in a max bid of 2000, and then to 2000 if two people put that or higher as their max bid. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The way it works is this:

Let's say Person 1 bids 200, and the current bid is 100
His will automatically got to 101.
If Person 2 now bids 150.
Person 1s will go up to 151 automatically.
If Person 3 bids 199
Person 2s bid will go up to 200
If Person 4 now bids 250
Person 2 will no longer automatically bid because the limit is reached
But Person 4s bid will go down to 201.

Hope that makes sense.

If that is right, then if someone bids 100 Dollars and anotherone 1.000.000 Dollars.. no one would ever bid more but the guy will get it for 101 Dollars. And if someone then bids 999.999 Dollars he/she won't get it, but the 1.000.000 guy/girl has to pay 1.000.000 Dollars.. that can't be right..

I think if someone bids 1.000 on a previous max of 100 it is because he/she wants to push out the others.. It is not so hard to do if you have to bid 10 dollars more then your last bid, even if you climb up to 1.000 Dollars but if the difference to the last one is so big then you are dettered..

If you bid $1000 it means you are willing to pay $1000. If you aren't willing to pay $1000 then you shouldn't have bid that much in the first place.

The reason the winning bidder always has to pay more than the second highest is because they have to outbid them. If there are two people who bid $999 and $1000 then the $1000 person has to pay all he can - why? Because if they said "I'll only pay $500 for it" then the guy who bid $999 could just come in and say "wait a minute, I'm willing to pay much more" and then the $1000 guy, who won the auction, does not get the item.

Of course, bidding $999 to force the $1000 guy to pay all of the money he can isn't a riskless strategy either. If the $1000 guy realizes he cannot or doesn't want to pay, it is then the $999 guy who must pay for the item. So you cannot just happily bid right under the maximum with no consequences.

Proxy bidding doesn't work like that.

Using Michael's example.

Person 1 bids $1000, where the current bid is $100
Person 2 does not know what Person 1's high bid is, the only thing Person 1 can see is that the current bid is $101. If Person 2 decides he is willing to pay $500, the number is bumped to $501, but Person 2 still does not know that Person 1 has a max bid of $1000.

Well, that's assuming that the $1000 person cancels their bid. If you're in second place when the auction ends, you're not committed to do anything.

One scam that might be going on is that the buyer is using two accounts to artificially raise the price to block other bidds, so when he cancels bids at the last minute, they'll drop. For example, if a****l cancelled all his bids, then h****i would pay $1,001. But o***o also dropped his bid, then h***i would pay $161. However, anyone wanting to pay $500, or even $1999 can't put their bid in, and may not be checking this item before it ends.

Since Erik can actually see the user ID's, he can make some determination on what's legit and what isn't. Also, on your seller account, you can block people that don't have a Paypal account configured. This will be very handy for weeding out fake accounts.

Erik, can you tell us if the guy actually paid? The feedback (and how soon he left it) seems to indicate he backed out of the deal.

I don't think I am allowed to give any details about the seller or the selling itself so I wont.

I guess you see his/her username and more, but for us, he/she is anonymous. We only see "a***l" and I think I've read that even those first and last letters aren't correct. To see what we see, log out of your ebay account and view your auction page and the winner's information again.

So I don't think anything speaks against letting us know whether you actually got paid, and it would satisfy our curiosity and might be helpful to know for others selling or buying high-value puzzles on ebay.

We're not asking for a real name or address. We're just asking if the user had paid or not, or if they've even responded to you and said that they refuse to pay. I don't believe there's any Ebay regulations against that.

but for us, he/she is anonymous.

You can look at Erik's feedback (
