I recently got my floppy cube and I like it a lot. Now I'm thinking it might be ideal for beginners and noncubers. It's a puzzle certainly everybody can solve without help, first by chance but then also consistently with a self-devised method. It's easy and lets people solve a whole puzzle (rather than having them solve one side as first goal, or the cross, or undo four moves, or whatever). I believe this can create interest and sense of achievement. And at least in order to solve it consistently, they have to devise a method (still easy), which ought to help them understand some basic principles, particularly thinking in terms of pieces rather than stickers, thinking in method steps and how to come up with a method. Which is useful for other puzzles they can then approach.

So if you're a beginner yourself, or if you're teaching people how to solve the 3x3x3 or are asked to do so, I suggest to start with the floppy cube and have them solve that on their own.

Your thoughts/experiences?

Interesting idea. I think it'll definately help to motivate people to learn how to solve a 3x3 or even higher. I think most people loose their motivation to solve the 3x3 when the algorithms come into play. They give up before ever experiencing the satisfaction of solving it.
