Hi all,

This is my YouTube video, trying to get an Ao5 sub 33 seconds, (which I have been stuck on for a while).
Been cubing for 7 months using CFOP.

Any constructive criticism of the video and my solves would be greatly appreciated.
I forgot to post scrambles and now they are lost forever. Sorry.

Thanks for the feedback,

-Joe

Joe, it seems you need to get better at look ahead and recognition. It's really impressive that you know a lot of pll and oll, but I see you when you have a pair right next to where it goes and you take a while to notice it. And while you know the algorithms for some OLLs, you stutter. Try doing them over and over and get the recognition down. I see you as a sub 30 solver in no time ;)

Hi, welcome to the forum, I know you may have heard this several times, but it is THE rule for getting better times, it is so important its the only thing ever I would write big and red: Slow down and look ahead. You could also save some time if you work on your pll recognition a bit.

You need to practice solving pairs with your eyes closed. I saw a lot of moving pairs around randomishly until you recognized what to do. I mean a lot a lot.

A good example is at 1:46, the orange/green pair. You could have just done y' R U' R' U R U R', but you did three rotations and took 4-5 seconds to solve the pair. Do solves with the timer and just pause on each pair and stare at it. Note which slot it goes into, and figure out a solution without making any moves. Then close your eyes and do it. I can't stress the importance of this enough. If you keep just doing timed solves, you'll end up getting better at bad habits. Fix this now.

I'll give you some suggestions on some really bad cases I saw.

At 2:40, the red/green pair, you did a long sequence with rotations when you didn't need any:

Inverse: R U R' U2 R U2 R' U y' U R' U' R d'
Solve: d R' U R U' y U' R U2 R' U2 R U' R'

There are several good options for this case, but I think the two most common ones are:

Inverse: R U R' U' R U R' U2 R U' R'
Solve: (R U R') U2 (R U' R' U R U' R')

and

Inverse: R U R' U' R U' R' U' R U2 R'
Solve: (R U2 R') U (R U R' U R U' R')

Or, if you're a rotation away from the insert then you can do a quick setup before rotating:

Inverse: R U' R' U2 y' R' U' R
Solve: (R' U R) y U2 (R U R')

Make use of the diagonally opposite slot being free if you can:

Inverse: R U' R' y' L' U' L
Solve: (L' U L) y (R U R')

A shorter, fancy 2-gen fingertricky one:

Inverse: R' U2 R' U R U' R U2 R
Solve: R' U2 R' U R' U' R U2 R

The shortest one I know, useful for edge control when you have that one edge bad on your fourth pair:

Inverse: R U' R' U' F R' F' R
Solve: (R' F R F') U (R U R')

Orienting the opposite edge from that one:

Inverse: F R' F' D' R U R' D R
Solve: R' D' R U' R' D F R F'

Orienting the back edge:

Inverse: F D R2 U R' U' R' D' F'
Solve: F D R U R U' R2 D' F'

Whatever you want to do.

At 3:32, red/green pair:

Inverse: R U2' R U' R' U R
Solve: (R' U' R) U (R' U2 R)

or

Inverse: R' U' R U2 R' U R
Solve: (R' U' R) U2 (R' U R)

For your OLL and PLL, try to recognize the case from the L F and R sides without doing cube rotations or U moves. Also, avoid rotating the cube before and after LL algs. Turn the U layer to rotate the case to starting position, do the alg, and another U layer move after if it was PLL.

Second solve, you did a double cube-rotation (Y2) before the T perm. U2 is MUCH faster, like 2 seconds faster. So the solve would've been sub-30 if you'd AUF'ed instead of rotating.

One of the things that helped me getting sub-30 was AUFing instead of cube-rotating for OLL and PLL. Seriously, it cuts out a LOT of time. Try to learn to recognise your PLLs and OLLs from only 2 sides, which will help this a lot.

I know a lot of people have said look ahead, but I average 19-21 seconds and I can't look ahead. You have a lot you can do to get faster, and I'd never say NOT to look ahead, because it's an awesome habit to get into, but just working on AUFing properly, and maybe some PLL drills would help you loads.

Have you timed your splits? Cross 12.5%, pairs 50%, OLL 16.5% and PLL 21.5% (including recognition) is what you should be aiming for. Identify your weak points and do targeted practice until they aren't your weak points any more. Then repeat.

For one solve, 27.79 for example the split is:
Cross: 11.98%
F2L: 53.14%
OLL: 12.59%
PLL 21.33%

What's a good distribution?
