First Step of Lars's Method

I would like to be able to make a square-1 into a cube fast. I was on Lars's site and I did not fully understand the first step explanation.

Im not super fast, I actually have forgotten how to solve sq-1. The ZB algs have also made me forget some of my OLLs.
But but but, I do have experience, and had a 40.xx average at one time.
(i also have an official time of 3x.xx so, trust me on this )
