There must already be a post on this, so sorry for the repetition if it exists.

So I gut my first DIY kit - one black one white from puzzleproz. Great source. Put together the black one last night and it was soooooo tight. I had to screw in the screws pretty far so I could put the center caps on. That made the cube way too tight to even turn.

It seemed that since the screws had to be in so tight that the springs were way to forcefully pressed against the screw head and base of the center cubie.

So I used a quick fix which may not be the right way to do it, but it's working so far. I just cut the springs in half to loosen the tension. So far so good, but thought I'd see what I was actually doing wrong and what the real method to solve it is.

I still have the white one to tackle tonight.

Any insights?

So I did the white one last night the same way.

Cut the springs in half.

Maybe I'm putting the washers on the wrong part?

I did it like this:

cubie ---> big washer ---> spring ----> small washer ---> all on the screw

The order is correct...don't know why your getting the problem. No worries cutting the springs in half as long as it is working for you.

Ok. I'll note that for next time. But this 1/2 spring/reverse washer method works pretty well.

Very smooth and no risk of center-cap pop-out because the tension isn't that high and the screws are further inside.

Some one else should try it. A more experienced cuber - so they can accurately comment on if it's a good method or not.

Yeah - the order is wrong. You should look it up online next time you put something together, cause now you don't get the same benefits that you would with a DIY.
