First Competition Stories?

At my second or third competition back in 2009 I joked with some of the people running the competition about awards. I don't remember a thing I said, but they actually gave me an award for "wanting an award". I still have the paper. They gave me a Rubik's brand cube and let me pick out a T-shirt. Problem was at that time I didn't know what my size was, so I picked out one that was a size or 2 too small.

One thing to note about your competition is the wonderful noise you will hear in the building. So many people clicking cubes around.

My first competition was the Battle of Lexington. Whilst I was solving and hanging out trying other cubes and what not, my family (Mom, dad, and sister) all decided to go touring the town. There was a festival across the street. So they went there and started shopping. While my mom was picking out books for her 2nd grade class, my dad asked her, "Do you know where we are at? We're at the Lexington Gay Pride Festival."

I DNFed 2x2. One year later Chris Olson DNFs 2x2. I wonder who will DNF next year.

Heh let's see...

My first competition was, at the time, one of the biggest ever (150 people). It was hectic like crazy, and I stood in the same spot judging 3x3 for 4 hours straight.

Highlight: Meeting Frank Morris

Most scary thing: I decided to give a go at doing a bld solve right at the end of the round. I was super focussed on what I was doing that I didn't notice what was going on around me. I started the solving phase so I couldn't see anything. At the end I stopped the timer and took off the blindfold, and suddenly about 200 spectators all started clapping. I realised I was the only one solving on stage, and they were all watching me >.< (it was a successful solve, and remains my only bld attempt in competition to date).

-Epic fail at 2x2 because first official solve nerves and a fail timer start. My 2x2 average was worst than my 3x3.
- Was happy with my 3x3 average.
- Saw a official sub 10 average. It was a 9.38 so close to the 9.21 world record.
Also I didn't get to see this but the first official sub 9 average was in the finals

The first competition I went to was River Hill Winter 2012. I'll let Felix Lee(or his two-year-old post) explain what happened:

Yeah I'm friends with him and I have to say he's not at all like he is on the forums.

anyway I will tell the story from my point of view. Anybody can feel free to add if I forgot something or if something is wrong.

I got up at 5:30 in the morning yesterday and checked to make sure that there were no cancellations. There were no cancellations when I woke up, and there were no cancellations up through when I had left my house. As soon as I get to the school, a custodian approaches me and tells me that I can't use the school. It turns out just 5 minutes before I got there, they made the announcement that all howard county facilities are closed for the day. He was being a real jerk about it and basically told me to get the hell out. So as soon as he walked away, I brought in all the things for the competition and started setting up the room. The custodian got really upset, and threatened to call the principal. I told him yeah, get the principal on the phone and let me talk to him. He walked out of the room and was on the phone for at least 30 minutes while I was still setting up the room. He comes back into the room and says that he talked to the assistant principal and that he says I have to get out of the building. I complain some more, and continue setting up the room, but after some more time he actually gets me to the principal. I tried to negotiate with him, but he wasn't able to make any exceptions (but at least he was very nice about it). I called Bob and let him know that we needed to find a new place to hold the competition.

The next hour or so was spent calling random places trying to see if they could hold a last minute event at their venue. Just about every single place we tried to contact was either already booked or closed. During this time, we had a ton of competitors entering and just sitting around waiting, and the custodian also kept nagging me to ****. Eventually, I believe Rowe googled "clarksville venues" or something like that, and we found somewhere a little less than 10 minutes away. A couple cubers (I don't know specifically who. Rowe, Dan, Tim, Kian, others?) went over to the venue to make sure it was suitable, and it was actually perfect. On top of that, they lowered the price to something extremely reasonable, and gave us the entire day through 5:00 instead of only 5 hours. We took it and let all the competitors know where the competition would be held. We proceeded to have a pretty awesome competition!

Also, luckily enough, the 40 pizzas that I ordered did not go to waste. The papa johns that I ordered from happened to be right next to the new venue that we moved to.

Luckily, the competition I organized, River Hill Winter 2014, was not hindered because of snow. :)

My first time going to a competition was fun! (even though i was too shy to talk to any other cuber :P) i got to hang out with my family and practice! 2 people set a NR there so that was kinda cool. All the tables were full there (since there was like close to 85 people there) so we had to stand by a wall but luckily some people gave us some chairs :P but it was a REALLY fun experience and i would recommend at least every speed cuber goes to ONE competition!!! im willing to go to another competition at anytime :P
