is it faster to have the cross on the bottom of the cube when solving or on the left? (best view of the cubies and most R and U moves...) thanks

True. He uses it to get the cross at the bottom without a cube rotation.
Hey, I personally use cross on the bottom. I just wanted to throw that out though.

Cross on left
Pros: Enables look ahead.
Cons: None really. It is a good compromise between cross on top and bottom. Having said that, not many people make a cross on the left, possibly because the fingertricks are not that good for this variation.
Cross on bottom
Pros: Enables great lookahead, and also decent fingertricks. Most of the really good speedcubers solve the cross on bottom, and so should you.
Cons: It may be a little akward for beginners at first because you cannot see your progress with the edges, and it is also hard to see if you accidentally screwed up. And if you do, it is guaranteed to be a huge setback.

I only know one person who solves cross on left. most speedcubers are more comfortable solving it on bottom.

I do cross on left. I'm not really fast though.
I fail at cross on bottom. Perhaps I need to practice

Don't forget that the World Record holder for 3x3x3 does his cross on the top.

It sounds like you're saying he keeps the cross on top for the entire solve, which is what a lot of noobs do, so you should be able to see how this would be really confusing. If you hold your cross on the bottom for F2L you solve cross on bottom, no matter where you start the cross out on.

holypasta: Fingertricks aren't actually bad at all for cross on left, although it does usually require a z' rotation at some point. Cross on left solvers tend to use pretty much only U, R, and x rotations for F2L. The recognition is a bit harder than cross on bottom, but depending on your style the fingertricks may be way faster.

Ignoring everything else wrong with that post, how is the <R U L d y> moveset associated with cross on D better than the <R U l x> moveset that goes with cross on left?

I solve my cross on the left. Although... on the last part, I make the turn so that the cross goes to the bottom (I turn the slice, not the entire cube, to do this)
