This reminds me of Jessica Fridrich's predictions (quoted in the wiki):don’t you guys notice, that every time we make predictions we always are wayyyy off? We try to make “reasonable” predictions but they are always proved wrong by somebody. So what if we try to be “unreasonable”? From Feliks’ 5.53 WR average in 2019(estimate) to Tymon’s 4.86 WR average in 2021, nearly 1 second was dropped in about three years. From Tymon’s 4.86 WR to Yiheng’s 3.90 average, over 1 second was dropped in about 3.5-4 years. Do not underestimate the improvement of cubers and cubing as a whole!
In the late 1990s Jessica Fridrich made an estimate that the limit for solving a Rubik's cube would be "10-12 seconds (the average time)":
(...)
In 2011 as world record averages tumbled below 8 seconds she quietly amended her web page to read: "Since the assumption for this estimate will probably be unrealistic for many years to come, I estimate the limit for speed cubing at 5 seconds (the average time)."
