This is a question that needs a revisit in 2025 as the time and efforts to get world class in one event or multiple events have increased many fold.
Homeschooling gives a substantial advantage to the cuber to pursue long practice sessions and do deep deliberate practice to improve their skill level.
Personally, I find it impossible to get world class at the professional stage of life due to time commitments and life catching on, so I want this thread to be focused on cubers from 10-18 age category.
I believe homeschooling is viable only if the parents see a future in cubing or the candidate themselves see a long of pursuing cubing long time and make it their primary lifestyle and source of income.
By the end of summer this year, my parents will proudly be able to say that they homeschooled their child from kindergarten. What they can't say though is that their decision was ever affected by my interest in cubing, and same for many other parents we've talked to. this thing between many speedcubers being homeschooled is marginally an example of homeschooling being such a good way for children to obtain a strong, safe education while also trying new things.
There are two very common reasons for homeschooling. One is that the parent believes that they can give their child the best form of education for the best shot at an impactful future. The second is that the child has found a talent that sets them up for this good future, and formal schooling would only be a distraction. For cubing, it is extremely rare for someone to make a successful living off of it, and the parents have to be confident that their child will indeed succeed.
homeschooling parents poor blood sweat and tears into homeschooling. They homeschool their kids so that the sky is the limit. A parent is not going to homeschool their child so that they can make below average pay.

this is true during elementary and junior high years. come high school, a homeschooler has to do more than a public schooled student so that they can be accepted into a good college. homeschooling doesn't just provide more time to have fun (unfortunately). plus, it combines school and homelife (this part can get rough lol).

i dunno lol, its really case by case, but i see what you mean, i honestly think it depends how much sacrifice is really made.

The most unrealistic part of this entire topic is making a living from speedcubing. thats the harsh reality. its still easier playing video games for a living. Plus, if parents pour their time into educating their children, they want to see a college degree and a meaningful job come from that.
Good post! homeschooling does present more oppurtunities for talents to be expressed and such, but again, there must be balance, and sacrifices must be made. education is just one aspect to achieving your goals, and its really the mind of the individual that makes the biggest difference.
