I bought a white DIY cube at a tournament (which was from cube4you), and didn't know too much about them at the time.

It's assembled, and locks up horribly. It has little tracks on the cubies - assumably to help while turning, but it just catches a lot.

What type of cube do I have, and how good is that type? Im wondering if I did something wrong, or if the cubes bad.

don't say it's a bad cube if you haven't tried it. musiccube, i suggest you shave off the .. um... ends of the TRACKS. this will aid in stopping the cubies catching each other.

and err... those tracks are not to aid turning. they are another attempt at making type a unpopable.

I had one which fits the description (but I swapped it for a storebought), it is a diy A II, and after breaking it in, this type works well, especially for OH.

I'm just going by every review I've ever seen for it.

why would it prevent popping? in my opinion, it is made to have a smaller surface, smaller surface -> smaller friction.
it would be an attempt to try to make the cube unpoppable if the tracks would fit in the centre pieces, but the tracks are just an elevation of the edge's side surface. no fitting in the centre pieces ;) also there is a standard 1-2 mm hole between the cubies.

Thanks guys. It is a DIY A II.
It doesn't seem like it's going to be any good for regular speedcubing, but it actually does feel like it has great potential for OH.
What is suggest i do to it? Sand down the ends of the tracks?
Jigaloo turns the white plastic yellow.

I feel that the tracks DO prevent popping. It just locks a lot because of it. A couple of times I've had a near pop, but it locked and didn't pop :P

I own a DIY A.II. it was dire for normal speedcubing because it used to lockup the entire time - literally once every 2 or 3 turns. i dremeled off the tabs, and lubed it, and now it pops occasionally, but it is definitely a decent OH cube, because the pieces are 'hard' and it turns easily, and allows for some 'stretching'. I would still have preferred the old type a or a (d) tho :(

this is what you should do.
