Hi, I'm having trouble with my rubiks.com DIY. The spring tensioin is what's killing me. When I have it too loose it always POP's. When it's tighter it doesn't POP, but it doesn't seem like it can be a good speedcube anymore because it's so tight. How much looser can these things get over time, even if you have the spring tension pretty tight?

I had EXACTLY the same problem, I've resorted to using my old cube, when I get some lube, I'm going to tighten it until it doesn't POP, and then lube the cube and see if it works any better.

I had the same issue as you a while back, after cubing with the same cube heaps and heaps i thought it was too loose.

So i tightened it, but then i thought it was too tight, so i loosened it and it just popped all the time.

In the end i just decided to tighten it so it didnt pop and wear it back in, it will loosen its self up.

I'm having the same problem with my new black DIY (a) kit from cube4you.

Right now I have it kinda tight. It feels weird... Doesn't feel like a speedcube at all.

Do I keep cubing with it until it's "broken in" and then lube it? Or do I lube it and break it in?

Would lubing it make it feel like a loose cube that doesn't POP?

my type A from cube4you isn't good at all... i don't understand how your cubes are so smooth... i've got a rubiks and a diy and they are sh*t...

I made my cube smoother yesterday. I used very fine sand. It wore the internals down really good. Now, my black DIY is so good. I want to do the same with my white final model (a)... But I can't get the tabs on the pieces...

I prefer to use a diamond coated file (mine is on my Leatherman multitool).

These files are of a VERY fine grit and will not cause your cube to scuff.

There is a danger in using too coarse of a file (or sand). You could create deep surface abrasions (scratches). These most certainly would catch against other abrasions and would slow your cube down.

Here is how I prepare my DIY cubes, and they are SO smooth, they fly!

I find it necessary to use the diamond file on the DIY cubes I bought. I check every piece and the ones with a very bad seam on the internals, I will file down the seam. I do not do every piece, only the ones that need it.

I assemble the cube and pay attention to tightening it enough so that it seldom pops in my hands when doing aggressive speedcubing moves.

I then work in my cube (without lubing it) for about an hour or two. I really work it hard too! The purpose is to get the unlubed pieces rubbing each other. After enough rubbing they will wear each other smooth so that any manufacturing defects are evened out slightly.

After breaking it in, I completely disassemble the cube (except the centers), and do my own little trick: I pull all the centers to ensure that they have an even amount of "give" in them. I fine tune the centers to make sure they are all roughly equal tension.

I find that doing this after I make sure it is tight enough not to pop ensures that not only is the cube stable, but that all the sides turn with even resistance.

Before I reassemble the pieces, I use an eyeglass cloth the completely wipe them off. This removes the very fine dust that is created when breaking in the cube.

I reassemble the cube, and lube it as the last step (except putting on stickers). I work in the cube with the lube for several minutes, then I wipe off any excess lube from the outside of the cube.

I have assembled many DIY cubes in the past year. I find that this method ensures the smoothest and most reliable cubes that I have found yet. I have however seen cubes which have less than ideal spring lengths. There is little you can do except put new springs on if your springs are too long. A friend tried cutting them unsuccessfully (he could only bend them not cut them with his scissors) and made them worse. He had to replace the spring with a spare he had.

I would be reluctant to recommend using sand, as you may not get a fine enough grit not to damage your cube and make it worse. I diamond file works amazingly for me with absolutely no scuffs or scratches.

Hope that helps (sorry for the length). :D

It's all personal preference. I use sand because it's faster... I think... It took me awhile to get enough fine sand (I filtered it myself).

I also have two cubes that I sanded down with diamond files too! They're the same as my very fine grit sand.

What would the solution be if you don't want to file or sand your cube ? If I tighten it all the way, would it loosen up itself ?

That may not work unfortunately, and neither may sanding/filing.

There are certain cubes that are just not constructed that well, or whose individual components are slightly mismatched or irregular.

My friend has a DIY speedcube that is red and of horrible quality compared to my white cubes.

His cube pops like a hand grenade, but if he tightens it any further it won't turn easily. He currently lubes his cube EVERYDAY to keep it turning smoothly.

It was worse before he filed the internals with my file.

It would often jam while turning one face because of the seams, after filing he has a passable speedcube. He has ordered a black DIY type A from cube4you.com and can't wait to retire the red one.

For him, the filing helped his cube become tolerable, but it can't compare to my cube which is of better material/build.

What I did with my cube4you type A's is to play with it for like a couple of days until it started popping then I tightened it a little again then played with it again (I had no lube at that time heheh) and it started popping again, I guess I really worked the insides hahaha. Then I got lube at last to solve the popping problem. I lubed my cube and tightened it ensure that I won't have POPs

i have similar problems with DIY's... I dont think they are constructed equal: My black cube is very good and I use it all the time, but the white cube... there is something wrong with it, and i cannot figure out how to fix it. I went through all ranges of tension and nothing really works.
