I really regret that cubers don't receive any awards like in other mental sports such as chess. A lot of persons dedicate their time to this amazing game and they receive nothing back instead of fame in the "Cubing Society" while in other sports champions receive some sum of money (I know that most of you are doing it for pleasure but such cubers as Erik Akkersdijk, Feliks Zemdegs etc. really deserve it because it's worth their effort).

I bet that Rubik's company earns millions from cube sales and why they can't sponsor financially these gamers or at least pay for their plane tickets and hotel. I had a discussion with one of my friends regarding this topic and we shared the same opinion, what are your thoughts?

Seven Towns is often a sponsor of events, as well as other puzzle companies. Also, larger competitions such as the World Competitions usually have money prizes. What other awards are you thinking about?

Uhm...
Faz earned 1000+ dollars a few month ago in a single competition
Cornelius won a ticket to a championship (I think Euro...) at the German nationals
We all got free entrance to the Warner moviepark, free comp, free T-shirt and free cube-logo bag at German nationals.

It was awesome. They (Jumbo) also payed for my and my mother's accomodation!
At 3 competitions I have been to there were money prizes (World Champs 2009, German Nats 2010, Euro 2010) and I'm not talking about a small amount of money.
With everything I won at Nats and Euro in total, I actually earned money by going to the two competitions. Is that enough of a proof that there definitely ARE prizes at some competitions? (In case anyone cares: I've also earned more money throughout the 2 years I've been cubing BY cubing than I've spent for it) :p
In German competitions, prices are nothing uncommon, mostly it's something like cubes or gift cards from cubikon.de (many comps are sponsored by them).

There's money in cubes, but no money in cube competitions (yet?). So there is relatively little to be made for companies by sponsoring cubers, which means prizes will be relatively small. Other sports can have such big sponsorships/endorsements because of how many viewers the events have - the companies can make millions by just getting their name out there.

I hope that Rubik's Cube will become again as popular as in the 20th century so the cubers will earn some money from competitions. If this will happen I am pretty sure that SpeedSolving community will be proud that we've been a part of this before anyone else.
