I'm not the best cuber in the world but working hard at it cause i am now an addict.
I have An eastsheen 2x2x2, 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 (which is **** house i hate it, in a way it moves to well, as soon as you do one turn the others want to follow requires alot of work on your other fingers to stop this happening)
My 3x3x3 is a D.I.Y rubix cube which is quite good i can cut corners pretty well with it, i also cant ajust it due to me gluing the centers on cause they kept falling out (I was getting quite irate with them), and of course v cubes for my 6x6 and 7x7.
I don't want to warp my 6x6 until i get a new one so i don't mess the whole process up and end up with no 6x6.

My question is simply this, what are your preferences and what would you recommend I investing in for faster cubing, I'd also rather short term results over endurance and reliability.

I would suggest that you should change form your Eastsheen 4x4x4, to Meffert's brand 4x4x4. You can find great 4x4x4's on dealextreme.com. For your 5x5x5, i would highly recommend V-cube 5. Mine is incredible!

For me
2x2 Eastheen
3x3 Rubik DIY
4x4 Eastheen
5x5 V-cube

Recommend depends on preferences
2x2 Eastheen for sure , but you might want to try some MOD's with springs
3x3 Lot of good speedcube are available , Rubik, C4Y cubes are widely used
4x4 the new meffert is good , I prefer Eastheen
5x5 V-cube others prefer the mefferts remake 5x5, before V-cube I used a 1986 version 5x5 (Aka meffert/Rubik's Whan/Bandelow cube)

2x2: Definitely Eastsheen, there's really no other logical option.
3x3: hmm, too many, check out this, it could help you decide. If you would rather short term results rather than endurance, maybe a Type F would be good?
4x4: Most prefer Meffert's, myself included, though some use Eastsheen.
5x5: V-Cube, There's others (that are cheaper) to choose from, but the V-Cube is definitely the stand out, I really recommend this.
