When you solve F2L (in whatever Friedrich-variant method), do you consciencely think about what color are on the pairs (or single cubies) you're looking for or have you trained your brain to just recognize colors?

For example: white cross on bottom, looking to place blue-red F2L pair. Do you think/say to yourself "blue-red, blue-red" as you look to pair the white-blue-red corner with the blue-red edge or do you just "observe" colors and match them?

Right now, I am doing the former - I say to my self (intenally) the color names I'm looking for.

If the latter, "color recognition" is the way to go, do you have any tips for training your mind? Or is it just repetition, forcing yourself not to name colors but just "know" them?

Does this make any sense?

I just do it like a pattern without thinking. Just practice and you wont have to think about the colors.

Hehe must by funny to watch...

Actually I do that too...
And I recognise colours by the corner stickers that have white or yellow on it and the edges that DON'T have white or yellow on it if you get what I mean.
This is why I can't be colour neutral.

And in roux its very much the same except I can recognise patterns. So I can be colour neutral. Then it's a matter of shouting out which pieces i need to find lol.
But for CFOP I somehow can't do what my subconscious wants to do because the cross 'gets in the way'...

Recognise the colour patterns of course (as in light and dark etc). I would still look for certain 'colours'. Or like a mirror blocks 'patterns'

No, it isn't that ridiculous... I know what pieces I'm looking for then I just look for them. And what other way would there be? I match colours if you see what I mean... I look for white or yellow on corners and NOT on edges.

I don't consciously think about what colors I'm looking for when I do Fridrich... but for edges on big cubes, where I have to find a specific edge as fast as possible and then find another specific edge and so on, sometimes I do say the pair of colors on the edge in my head. I usually don't need it, but if I'm not concentrating so well, it can definitely help.

Yeah, exactly, not by literally saying "DARKGREY-OTHERDARKGREY" in your head.

In CFOP for me it's a bit different; I recognise it by matching colours.
That's not what I'm getting at. Playing the "spot the colours" game and thinking only in colour names rather than by finding the corner-edge pairs that have the same colours without thinking of the actual colour names, isn't the best way to go at it.

edit: This is only for 3x3x3 F2L.

O yah of course.
I mean for finding pieces I look for colours when having to find specific ones.
Like for example I see a RBW corner.
Then in my head it's like "where's that RED BLUE edge??".
Other times I see F2L pairs straight on and that's fine.
