Episode XX+7

Princess Leia and
R2D2 were captured by
natives on their way back from
a mission to the Endor moon. The final
match of Rubik's cube was about to begin...

The chief said, "Now, let's begin the final match. Last time and the time before, we rounded up to the nearest decimal point, but this time we won't be doing that, so there will be no draws."

"Your opponent this time is Max P, the winner of the world championship in January of this year," he introduced, and a man with Asian features came out of the tent.

Princess Leia thought, "I feel like I've heard that name somewhere before. And he has Asian features too. Maybe, um..." when the chief added, "Apparently his family includes a world-famous Rubik's Cube master. He has that bloodline too, although his last name is the single letter P." She muttered, "I thought so!"

The chief said, "Everyone is busy. To save time, we'll start with two slots completed in F2L this time." and handed Max the scrambled cube shown below.

After completing the inspection in about 10 seconds, Max looked confident, as if he'd "predicted everything."

He began the Solve, and with his high-speed TPS, he completed it without stopping a single move. The chief looked at the stopwatch, grinned, and proudly declared,

"The Solve time is 2.3 seconds. Completed in an astonishing 19 moves!"

Princess Leia's eyes widened in shock. As she stood there in shock, R2D2 said, "The probability that you will win is a number that does not contain a 1 within the significant decimal points, meaning it is effectively zero percent."

She was in a desperate situation. How would she be able to overcome this difficult situation, or would she even be able to overcome it…?

By the way, readers, how did Max P complete the Solve in 19 moves (QTM-based)? Give it a try!

Let's start by looking at the solution that Max P performed. He switched from yellow top & blue front to red top & yellow front, and completed the solve with relatively easy moves: F → right sledgehammer → left sledgehammer → U' → Sexy move Sune → U'. 19 moves, Great!

Now, let's get back to the epilogue.

As Princess Leia was at a loss, R2D2 said, "We've received a communication from a spaceship called the USS Enterprise. It's projected in visible light, visible only to humans."

The image displayed Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. Captain Kirk started to say, "Ma'am, this is Captain Kirk of the USS Enterprise of the Federation. While passing the moon Endor, we have confirmed the presence of both humans and robots through a remote scan and have established communication. We can also see your competition."

She asked, "Captain Kirk, I'm Princess Leia of the Galactic Empire. Captain, I want to get out of this predicament. Do you have any ideas?"

Captain Kirk asked Mr. Spock, "Spock, what do you think?" He replied, "It's risky, but I have an idea. What if we slowed down the time on the stopwatch the chief is carrying? If we could send it back and forth to a distant location at near-light speed, we could slow down the displayed time."

Captain Kirk said, "That's a good idea. I'd like you to do the theoretical calculations to slow down the stopwatch by about 10 seconds to allow Princess Leia to win."

Spock then began to calculate, saying, "Let's calculate the speed and distance the object should be moved by the time transport device. Based on the Special Theory of Relativity..."

Objective:
To calculate the speed and distance required so that 10 seconds on the moon Endor equals 1 second in a moving object.

Conditions:
The speed of light is 300,000 km/sec.

Calculation:
Speed of light: c (km/sec)
Speed of a moving object: v1 (km/sec)
Distance traveled by light in a moving object: d1 (km)

According to the Special Theory of Relativity, if 10 seconds on the moon Endor equals 1 second in a moving object, it means that light in the moving object appears to be traveling at 1/10 the speed of light. Therefore, in 1 second from the moon Endor, light in the moving object appears to have traveled 30,000 km.

The directions of light and the moving object are illustrated in a right-angled triangle as shown below, and d1 can be calculated using the Pythagorean theorem.

(Conceptual Image without accuracy in length of the lines)
Image.jpeg

(300,000 x 300,000) = (30,000 x 30,000) + (d1 x d1)
↓ Get d1
d1 x d1 = 89,100,000,000
d1 = √89,100,000,000 = 298,496 (km)

The speed of a moving object, when converted to the speed of light, is 0.995 (99.5%) as shown below.

v1 = c x 298,496 / 300,000 = c x 0.995

The distance (d) required to move the object can be calculated using the following formula.

d = d1 x 10 (sec) = 2,984,960 (km)

Conclusion:
To make 10 seconds on the moon Endor equal 1 second in a moving object, it is necessary to move it 2,984,960 km (1,492,480 km one way) at 99.5% of the speed of light.

Mr. Spock reported his calculations to Captain Kirk, adding, "The risk I mentioned is that the chief who is holding the stopwatch and the competitor need to be transported at the same time."

Captain Kirk immediately told Princess Leia, "You will win. I don't have time to explain in detail, but I'll let the chief and your competitor disappear for 10 seconds. During that time, you should have mostly completed the solve."

As soon as the chief started the stopwatch, he and the competitor disappeared.

Just before Princess Leia completed the solve using the usual F2L, OLL, and PLL, the chief and the competitor reappeared.

The chief stopped the stopwatch as soon as Princess Leia completed the solve and said, "Your solve time is... 2.1 seconds. Therefore, you win!"

The chief and Max P looked at the stopwatch repeatedly in disbelief…

I knew it! Max P was secretly a FMC guy, not a speed cubing guy. I am judging this becuase he found a near-optimal QTM solution (optimal is 17 and there is only 1 such optimal cannonical solution), and because he apparently doesn´t know what Sune means :-P

bcube, thanks for your joke, I liked it.
Can you show us the 17 moves which is optimal, for our reference?

As for Sune/Anti-Sune, I wonder why they were not named more interesting terms, like Arpeggio/Anti-Arpeggio, Somersault/Anti-Somersault 😜

Thanks.
It is impossible for Max P to encounter it in the 15-second inspection time.
