To quote an entry on canadianCUBING,

In one of the more unusual variants to speedsolving, Vancouver-based cubers Vince Yim and Hong Chen are taking their love of speedsolving to new extremes.

With the cooperation of Canadian Blood Services, members of the Vancouver canadianCUBING community will be at Canadian Blood Services (4750 Oak Street, Vancouver) donating blood this Saturday (August 29th at 2:30) while doing one-handed solves to raise awareness of the need for blood donors and to promote the upcoming Vancouver Open, happening in September 12, 2009.

It happened earlier today and I was wondering if anything similar has been attempted before? Also if maybe other groups of solvers around the world would want to do similar events in their areas.

The donors there were Hong Chen, Vince Yim, and Sarah Strong (Sa967St). I was supposed to do it too but couldn't because I had recently returned from a supposed malaria risk zone. =( Overall it was a interesting event and experience.

Any thoughts/comments on the topic?

I never would have thought of a way to combine cubing with community service in such an innovative way. Props to whoever came up with that idea, and I encourage everyone to get in contact with your local red cross to try and support the cause!

I like this a lot.

I remember a few years back a "cubing for charity" idea was tossed around. Get a few cubers to do a 1 hour marathon, and have people "pledge" to donate some amount of money per cube solved by a person. If you get a bunch of people to donate a few cents per cube, donations can add up pretty quick.

I OH every time I have to get shots or get blood drawn. Takes my mind off the pain. That was a cool idea though.

my arm still feels a bit weak :p

Did you end up flying out there to promote and flying out again to compete? Or are you just enjoying the West Coast for all it's worth?
I was supposed to go to Kelowna (about a 3 hour drive from Vancouver) with the rest of my family to visit some relatives, but my parents let me stay in Vancouver first for a few days to attend bleedsolving and a cube meet, then go to Kelowna later.
I wish I could have just stayed in B.C. until after the Vancouver Open (I just came home about an hour ago), but I can't miss the first 2 weeks of school :p Yeah, I'm going back there again in a few weeks for the competition.

I think they should organize a can food drive in Toronto. Instead of the typical money registration fee, you have people bring in a certain number of canned goods....they could call it "Can Aid N' Cubing"! :)

Oh, Bryan, i love your awareness of Canadians and cubing. You are a good guy, it was nice to meet you at Stanford.

I will say that this general idea of using a cubing event to help a charity is something canadianCUBING has been throwing around for some time. It is on the list of things to do, but exactly how is still to be decided. We will hopefully do it in 2010.

Any help, suggestions, information, guidance on it would be much appreciated.

Bleedsolving, however, was completely orchestrated by Vince, so i must give him full credit for the idea, organization and execution of the event.
