I'm planning on lubing my DIY. When I take it apart, I notice that each of my pieces are covered with some sort of black powder. Should I clean that stuff off before I use the silicone spray? If so, how do I wipe it off (with water? with a damp cloth? etc)

Its either you used vaseline before in the cube and it collected dust with it. Or you wore in your cube scrapign some of the plastic off.

And yes wipe your cube clean then silicone it.

You can use a dry cloth but if it doesnt come off try a wet cloth or a baby wipe.

Yeah it's fine. Just wipe it out with a damp cloth or a dry cloth. Doesn't matter much. It just means you wore down the parts which is good.

:D . No thanks, parenting definitely would not be my thing  . I just had a brainwave one day when trying to get the gunk out of difficult corners, I had a spare toothbrush! It wasa rilliant idea, works really well, give it a good clean, no damage...
