Do you think this will work?

The idea is to make Maglev cubes more like a traditional cube, more user controllable or progressive in turning (without it jumping to the next position). I think it should eliminate most of the friction, harshness and noise like current Maglev systems do, but also reduce some weight (since springs are lighter than magnets) as it improves performance when we can "flatten the curve" a bit, the curve that results from the non-linear force-to-distance characteristics of repulsing magnets. The soldering means there should be no turning or friction between magnet/spring/screw.

The problem. The main cause of the potential problem with current Maglev systems are besides weight, the funny feel, the loss of control (freewheeling as the layer levitates). There is also a concern due to the different feel, when one uses both Maglev and non-Maglev cubes. The following diagram explains the curve that causes these potential problems, a result of the non-linear magnetic force.

The theory

It says "Half strength" spring or magnets (compared to what is normally used now), but that is just for illustration. The right combination of strengths need to be adjusted through experimentation to find the optimal values to provide a good performance over the working range "d", which is the 2mm or so of distance between the range of screw distance settings that a properly set up cube will have for most cubers. Where this range is placed will affect the linearity and feel, and the placement should be adjustable using different travel distances and magnet strength.

Nothing serious, just a bit of fun on a slow day. All comments welcome.

Edit. I just realised that the diagram is too simplistic. The spring should have ends that are flat rings, like in this photo, so that the pressure it exerts on the screw head and on the magnet is evenly distributed.

Naw, the only thing they are really charging is how many magnets and the how well the plastic was designed. If GAN made a cube like that, or any company, really, probably wouldn't be too much higher in price.
GAN is charging high because people pay for it, not because they have "better plastic" or "more magnets". A CH WR M Maglev is about half the price of a gan maglev, and it has all the same features.

You are right! Gan, they may have came up with the corner core magnets, but their maglev technology isn't really up their. Besides, didn't Moyu patient their design?
Best cube with corner-core magnets is the Gan 11 M pro, but Corner-core magnets AND maglev is what CubableYT said: the CH Mod Maglev WRM 2021

that sounds like a good idea, I didn't understand much because I am not a big brain 1Q 1000 like you are, but that would be really cool if companies started implementing that. Are you going to make a cube with that in it?

If companies want to get rid of spring noise, weld or glue the spring to a metal washer (like I tried with my RS3M 2020) or encase the spring in its own subassembly like GES nuts.

Anyway if MoreTry is gonna put 5 magnets into their maglev cube, I don't see why not.

I am waiting for a maglev conversion kit (the ring magnets) and also the CH core magnet conversion kit (Cubers Home) kit for my Moyu WRM 2021 to arrive. Should be fun putting on each of those to see, for myself, how much actual performance gain, each or both of them together can provide. There has been various claims and questions about their real benefit or whether that's actually worth the weight and cost for these latest innovations (core magnets and maglev). I will be comparing these add-on kits or their performance with a standard WRM 2021 and also a standard factory assembled CH Moyu WRM 2021, which will be another reference. Sorry, I digressed, that's a related but broader experiment. For this particular hybrid sprung maglev design, I will have to find the right magnets and springs, i.e. weaker versions that fit the cube. I can modify the springs by cutting and bending but the magnets are hard to find. Will attempt to do with what I have or can find. However, without the right magnets, the weight reduction is not possible.

I am clueless on how companies decide on these thing. It seems a lot depends on how much a company can charge or profit from it. For example, welding seems costly or labour intensive to me, compared to simply assembling mass produced parts. It also depends on how much consumers are willing to pay for fancy features. I think it is a good thing that some companies are trying and pushing the envelope, even if it is getting harder to achieve results for the cost. We should be thankful for that and we have a choice in what we buy. I mean it's a good thing that products with everything under the sun is available, like the Yoo Deluxe. It is also nice to have products like the Tornado V2, and the various conversion kits.

If I were to get the WRM 2021 Maglev, should I do this with the extra springs that I have gotten over the months.

Saying they came up with core corner magnets is a stretch they were just the first to implement it
