Are you trying to be a speedcuber? Or do you just want a beginner method for solving the cube?

If you just want to solve the cube, just use Dan Brown's YouTube video on how to solve the cube. It's what I hear most people use. I wouldn't know, the beginner method I used was different, it was a zero memorization, no algorithm, edges-first method (cross, keyhole, edge-control OLL, then commutators for the corners).

If it's speedcubing you're interested in, when I was just first starting out, I just did a Google search on speedcubing, and just browsed the first few results, and ended up following Macky's guide here http://cubefreak.net/speedcubing.html

But I eventually just found my own learning pace (sporadically memorizing problem OLLs and PLLs instead of methodically memorizing each one, starting off with intuitive F2L right from the start, etc.)

Most people recommend badmephisto's F2L tutorial too. I wouldn't know, since I learned F2L on my own, but you can try it out if you want.

As for when to move to advanced methods, that's up to you. I know someone who learn Fridrich right from the start (he couldn't even solve on side before he started), and was sub-20 in 2 months. Although most are more comfortable with breaking the 2 minute barrier with a beginner method first, before moving on.
