If a competitor drops out of a competition after few rounds without informing the delegate and/or organizer, it leads to several problems to the competition’s efficient running.

  • In finals, the competitor’s name is called out only to realise they are not showing up, wasting precious time.
  • The competitors name in the group will be called out. Although in practice the group is called out and not the participant’s name.
  • During the prize distribution ceremony, the announcer has to call the no-show podium holder, leading to delay. Although this is not a problem as it is the last event of the competition.
My take on why it is a bad idea to take action on no-show:

  • The competitor may have a genuine reason to skip some rounds of the competition.
  • It is not the job of delegate to take action on no-shows. They already have a lot of things to delegate on the competition day.
  • Makes cubing comps a less fun experience as there is a consequence to skipping rounds.

You're missing the only good reason why no-showing is bad: Because it will most likely prevent other competitors from advancing to the next round (and even though there's a regulation that says no-showers can have their spots replaced that empty spot may not be filled)

Otherwise it doesn't matter

There is one thing that you didn’t mention which I’d personally consider MUCH worse:

Competitors no-showing for the entire competition

It is a problem, especially for organizers, as people not showing up eats away at the competitor list.

Take a look at this competition:

The competitor limit was 150, and it got full. However, only 124 people actually showed up. This lead to a 17% no-show rate! 26 people could have gone to this competition if it weren’t for people no-showing!

There needs to be a rule put in place to prevent this to make sure that people email before cancelling.

I emailed to cancel my next comp (it was tomorrow) after May 5 (total closing date) and they didn't email me back or cancel my registration at all, this probably happens with others as well
